Named in will of Uncle John Greer of Curlaught, Agahlow, Tyrone 8 Dec 1736 (#5403 Greer Will Book) "L8 to James Greer son to my bro James Greer decd"
Cancery Bill 20 Jul 1767 (#5199 Greer Will Book) is brought by James Greer of Newry Co Down Merchant v his aunt Mary Dougan als Greer of Corlaught Co Tyrone in which he says he was a minor for 12 years after the death of his Uncle John in 1737, and his father was elder brother to the said John and would have been heir at law but was deceased, so he, the minor James was heir at law. He states that Mary, wife of John proved the will and possessed the freehold which John did not specify in his will. He said that Mary married afterwards Arthur Dougan, since deceased, and published that the farm was left to her.
James said that about 12 weeks ago in County Tyrone he asked to see the will, and Mary refused. James demanded possession of the leasehold, and she also refused. She said she was going to leave it to her relatives.
"My Irish Ancestors," by Linda Bailey linka.europe.com places two Greer families in Artrea parish - both headed by a James in the late 1700s. Since David's uncle Thomas had the Artrea estate and died with no male heirs, and since the only heir of Thomas was James, the son of his brother James who was in a dispute with his uncle John's second wife regarding his being the heir to the family estate nearby, it is likely that William, Thomas' next living brother inherited the Tievenagh, Artrea property and then passed it to his only son David. The wills do not describe the property disposition.
