Pages: 56,57, and 148

Pgs 56 & 57. " The Gassiot's came by ox wagons from Louisiana in 1848 or 1849 and settled on the Big Sandy, which was a short distance north of Hutto, and was between two creeks. When the water was up, the people ate hominy until the water dried enough for them to go to a mill to have meal ground for bread. Nick, Salathial (Orian's father), Williford, and John Gassiott fought in the Civil War, and all came back. Salathiel was a sergeant, and his family has the muster roll of his company. After the war he taught school for several years.

Salathiel Gassiott married Selcia Perry. Her Father, John Perry, moved his family from Alabama in wagons and settled on Hickman Creek."

Pg 148 " John Perry moved his family and slaves from Alabama to Hickman Creek some four miles from Handley's Store. This family had a peculiar sad experience on the way  They came in ox wagons and crossed the Mississippi River on a ferry boat. As one yoke of oxen pulled a wagon of household goods up the bank of the river on this side [west], the wagon came loose from the tongue and rolled back into the river; all of the load was lost. Perry bought fifty acres of land on Hickman creek for a little Indian pony. Alfred and Milano Perry fought in the Civil War. Miss Selicia Perry married Selathial Gassiot of Jones Prairie."
