Here is a brief beginning to our family history.

My family's line of descent is marked with a **.

**John Stephen TRENKL was born about 1718 in Palatine, Germany. He arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam on the ship "Charming Nancy" on 9 November 1738. That same year he took the required Oath of Allegiance to the British Crown, and was listed as age 20.  He was married to Eve Catherine HAMBRECHT (daughter of Hans "Conrad" HAMBRECHT) on 27 March 1739 in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. Eve Catherine HAMBRECHT was born in 1710.

The next spring, John Stephen appears to have settled in the Winchester, Virginia community in Augusta County (now Frederick county) in the Shenandoah Valley.  Three of his children (Anna Catarina, Anna Maria Agnessa, and Agnes) are shown to have been baptized at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, PA, very close to their birth date in 1749-1751.  It may have been that Catherine went home to Lancaster to have the children and had them baptized there; or it may have been that John Stephen went on ahead and the full family didn't arrive in Virginia until later. John Stephen became well-established in the Winchester community which he settled just south of in an area known as the Opequon Creek Colony. Inhabitants were predominately German farmers who were close knit, frugal and prolific.

Catherine is mentioned in the Christian Straits Diary as having been buried 2 May 1786, at age 76. John Stephen died a few days after her on 7 May 1786. Both are buried in the Old Lutheran Cemetery at Mt. Habron near Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia, USA.

John Stephen TRENKL and Eve Catherine HAMBRECHT had the following children:

  1. Michael TRINKLE.
  2. Anna Catharina TRINKLE.
  3. **Christopher TRINKLE.
  4. Anna Maria Agnessia TRINKLE.
  5. Agnes TRINKLE.
  6. Susanna TRINKLE.

**Christopher TRINKLE was born about 1752 in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia, USA. He served in Revolutionary War. In 1777 he enlisted in the American army and was assigned to the company of Capt. C. Triplet, of the 6th Campbell Regiment of the 1st Virginia Volunteers. Also served under Capt. Sirbling and Capt. Sheperd and Col. Campbell. He fought in the battles of Brandywine, Camden, Rootsford, Guilford Courthouse, Utaca Springs and was finally discharged at Round Oak, SC. Christopher Trinkle's pension claim number is S36829. He was married to Elizabeth WEISER (daughter of Adam WYSOR and Elizabeth BECK) about 1776 in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia, USA. Elizabeth WEISER was born about 1756 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. The Trinkles moved with the Weisers about 1790 to Montgomery Co. (now Pulaski), in southwest Virginia. The move was probably prompted by the hard time German immigrants had in getting clear title to the land in northern Virginia. He secured land grants near Dublin in 1802 from Governor Monroe. Christopher appeared on the census in 1810 in Montgomery (Pulaski) County, Virginia, USA. Elizabeth died about 1812 in Montgomery (Pulaski) County, Virginia, USA. She was buried in Weiser Cemetery, Dublin, Pulaski County, Virginia, USA.

In 1813, Christopher sold his land to his son Stephen, and for reasons unknown, moved the rest of the family to Indiana, settling near Hardinsburg in Washington County. It is suspected that the move was precipitated by a combination of the death of his wife, the availability of good, fertile, inexpensive land, and a disagreement with son Stephen over the issue of slavery. The Indiana farm, purchased 30 November 1814, is located at SW Section 15 one-half mile west of the Sinking Springs Church.  Christopher can be found in the Washington County, Indiana census in 1820.

He died on 16 August 1829 in Hardinsburg, Washington County, Indiana, and was buried in Sinking Springs Church Cemetery, Hardinsburg, Washington County, Indiana. His gravesite originally was outside the present cemetery, but when the highway was widened, he was moved inside. The DAR has placed a monument at his grave in his honor.
