THE PORTZ FAMILY

Nicholas PORTZ was born on January 25, 1824 in Prussia, Germany.  He was married to Margaret BRAUN (daughter of Joseph BRAUN and Barbara HOFFMAN) about 1844/45.  Margaret BRAUN (daughter of John BRAUN and Barbara HOFFMAN) was born on June 11, 1825 in Germany.  Nicholas emigrated between 1853 and 1854 to America.  He preceded the family by about a year.  Margaret and the children arrived in the Port of New York on the ship "Marcia C Day" from Le Havre on August 4, 1854.   The family appeared on the census in:

• 1850 in Jackson Township, Seneca County, Ohio (Household #145)
• 1860 in Jackson Township, Seneca County, Ohio (Household #1422)
• 1870 Washington Township, Mercer County, Ohio (Household #2) - Census taker evidently misunderstood and wrote backwards - wrote the last name as Nicolas and first name is scribbled but appears to be Portz. The son Nicholas Portz is listed as the same, so census taker was probably just told he was named after his father!

Nicholas died on March 27, 1877 in Mercer County, Ohio.  Margaret appears on the census in:

• 1880 in Washington Township, Mercer County, Ohio (Household #240)
• 1900 in Washington Township, Mercer County, Ohio (Household #45)
• 1910 in Washington Township, Mercer County, Ohio (Household #59 living in household with son Robert)

Margaret died of bronchitis on April 4, 1911 in Washington Township, Mercer County, Ohio.  She was buried at St Peters Cemetery.  Nicholas PORTZ and Margaret BRAUN had the following children:

1. Margaret PORTZ was born on June 4, 1845 in Germany.  She was married to John EISCHEN (son of Mathias EISCHEN and Margaret KOLEYN) on October 22, 1861.  John was born on October 22, 1835.  He died August 1, 1905 in Indiana.  Margaret  died on July 12, 1925.  Margaret and John had the following children:  Margaret EISCHEN, Peter EISCHEN, Catherine EISCHEN, and Sarah Ann EISCHEN.

3. Jacob PORTZ was born on 8 April 1849. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Coldwater, Mercer County, Ohio, Household #235. He died on 6 July 1913. He was buried in St Peter Cemetery, Washington Township, Mercer County, Ohio
4. Jacob PORTZ was born on April 8, 1849.  He died on July 6, 1913. He was buried in St Peter Cemetery, Washington Township, Mercer County, Ohio.
5. Catherine PORTZ was born about 1851.
6. Mary PORTZ was born about 1853.
7. Nicholas PORTZ was born October 10, 1855.  He died in 1924 and was buried July 13, 1924 in Red Willow County, Nebraska.
8. John PORTZ was born on April 15, 1858 in Fostoria, Seneca County, Ohio. He was married to Elizabeth Ann (Bessie) WAGNER (daughter of John WAGNER and Andrea LIPPS) in May 1881. Elizabeth Ann WAGNER was born on October 22, 1858 in Mercer County, Ohio. She died of cerebral hemorrhage on February 25, 1948 in Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio.  John died of angina pectoris coronary on March 11, 1950 in Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio. Both were buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, SR 119 and Lowry Rd, Recovery Township, Mercer County, Ohio.  John and Elizabeth had the following children:  John Barney PORTZ, Catherine B PORTZ, Bertha PORTZ, and Ethel Mary PORTZ.
9. Robert PORTZ was born in 1860. He died in 1923. He was buried in St Peter Cemetery, Washington Township, Mercer County, Ohio.
10. Joseph PORTZ was born on February 19, 1862 in Mercer County, Ohio. He was a brewer. Left Mercer County, Ohio, about March 1889 to go west. He was married to Angelina JACOBS (daughter of J Nicholas JACOBS and Anna SCHNEIDER ) on August 30, 1892 in Uniontown, Whitman County, Washington. Angelina JACOBS was born on September 24, 1871 in Minnesota. Joseph died of blood poisoning on January 11, 1913 in Uniontown, Whitman County, Washington. He was buried in Uniontown Cemetery, Whitman County, Washington. Angelina died on August 29, 1938 in Lewiston, Nez Perce County, Idaho. She was buried in St Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Uniontown, Whitman County, Washington. Joseph PORTZ and Angelina JACOBS had the following children: Florence Sophia (Flossie) PORTZ, Elsie Kathryn PORTZ, Angela A PORTZ, and Estella L PORTZ.
11. Barbara PORTZ was born in 1863 in Mercer County, Ohio.  She married 1) George TURKS who died before 1906 as she was listed as "widowed" when she married 2) John KANS.  Barbara PORTZ and George TURKS had the following children:  Mary L TURKS, John Casper TURKS, Charles Jacob TURKS, Catherine Ruth TURKS, and Aloys Louis J TURKS.
12. Susanna PORTZ was born in July 1865 in Ohio. She was married to Peter ULEMAN on May 8, 1883 in Mercer County, Ohio. Peter ULEMAN was born in 1862 in Ohio. They appeared in the census in Wabash Township, Jay County, Indiana in: 1900 (Household #50) 1910 (Household #77) 1920 (Household #48), and 1930 (Household #70).   Peter died on October 2, 1935.  Susanna died on March 16, 1938 in Jay County, Indiana.  Both were buried in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery, Bryant, Jay County, Indiana.  Susanna PORTZ and Peter ULEMAN had the following children: Celesta M ULEMAN, Edward T ULEMAN, Clara ULEMAN, Norra G ULEMAN, Susanna M ULEMAN, Harman S ULEMAN, Martha Margaret ULEMAN, Abba ULEMAN, Katherine Alvada ULEMAN, and Noah Nicholas ULEMAN.
13. Agnes PORTZ was born about 1868.
14. Son PORTZ.  The 1880 census has a son, but the name is unreadable.

**Peter PORTZ was born on September 11, 1847 in Prussia, Germany.  During the Civil War he was a soldier in the Union Army, having run away from home at the age of 15 years, in order to enlist.  His father brought him home again, but he ran away the second time and served until he was honorably discharged.  He served in the 57th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, September 1862 - May 1864.  He was married to Catherine Lucinda (Katie) GIBSON (daughter of James GIBSON and Mary ADNEY) on July 11, 1876 in Mercer County, Ohio by John McAfee, J P.  The family appeared on the census in 1880 in Washington Township, Mercer County, Ohio (Household #249).  Catherine died on January 29, 1884 in Mercer County, Ohio.  She was buried in Green Mound (aka Adney) Cemetery, Recovery Township, Mercer County, Ohio. 

Peter PORTZ and Catherine GIBSON had the following children:

1. Otto Marland PORTZ was born on March 23, 1878 in Mercer County, Ohio. He was married to Betty UNKNOWN on July 3, 1903 in Madison County, Indiana. Betty was born May 2, 1881 in Switzerland. She was previously married to a Mr. TANNER.  Otto and Betty lived in Charleston, West Virginia. Betty died on April 3, 1943 in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Otto died of cardiac failure on June 29, 1945 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.  Otto  and Betty had the following children: Chester PORTZ, Raymond PORTZ, Sylvia PORTZ, Belvia PORTZ, Robert Nicholas PORTZ, Leonard Claude PORTZ, Clyde PORTZ and Bettie Mae PORTZ.

3. James C PORTZ was born April 11, 1883 in Macedon, Mercer County, Ohio.  He was married to Catharine HEMMELGARN (daughter of Joseph HEMMELGARN and ?? GEISE) on October 19, 1905 in Mercer County, Ohio.  Catharine Hemmelgarn was born about 1883 in Ohio.  James died on January 28, 1920 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  James C PORTZ and Catharine HEMMELGARN had the following children:  Barbara PORTZ, Helen C PORTZ, and James Raymond PORTZ.

Peter operated a general store at Macedon, Washington Township, Mercer County, Ohio.  He later moved to Jay County, Indiana.  He was married second to Amanda ARBAUGH (daughter of John S ARBAUGH and Sarah Jane CRING) on September 15, 1889 in Jay County, Indiana.  Amanda ARBAUGH was born on January 21, 1864 in Jay County, Indiana.  She had been previously married to John Wesley DRAKE. 

Peter and Amanda had the following children:

1. Vaughn Russell PORTZ was born July 24, 1889.  He died on  March 11, 1947 in Sacramento County, California.
2. Ella Opal PORTZ was born on October 21, 1891 in Ohio.  She married William Pearl TREECE about 1910.  William pearl TREECE was born on August 31, 1879 in Ohio.  He died on May 21, 1958 in Orange County, California.  She died on May 9, 1971 in Orange County, California.  William Pearl TREECE and Ella Opal PORTZ had the following children:  Jack Pearl TREECE, Lois Catherine TREECE, Mary Helen TREECE, Darva TREECE, and Gloria Jean TREECE.
3. Peter Lavern PORTZ was born on November 18, 1893 in Macedon, Mercer County, Ohio.  He died on April 3, 1895 in Mercer County, Ohio.
4. Nicholas Admiral PORTZ was born on June 6, 1895 in Jay County, Indiana.  He died on September 2, 1955 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.
5. Thelma Juanita PORTZ was born on May 30, 1900 in Jay County, Indiana.  She was married to 1) Mr MCCABE and 2) Frank Edward WEIMER.  Thelma died on June 14, 1984 in Los Angeles County, California. Thelma Juanita POTZ and Frank Edward WEIMER had the following child:  Frank Edward WEIMER Jr,
6. Margaret M PORTZ was born on February 9, 1903 in Jay County, Indiana.  She married Mr. SCHRYVER.  She died 13 May 1966 in Los Angeles County, California.

Peter died on 25 February 1909 in Jay County, Indiana.  He was buried in Green Mound (aka Adney) Cemetery, Mercer County, Ohio.  After his death, Amanda moved with the children to California.  She died on March 25, 1940 in Huntington Beach, Orange County, California.  She was buried in Westminster Memorial Park, Orange County, California.
