Here is a brief beginning to our family history.  

My family's line of descent is marked with a **.

Our Mewhirter line can be found to have many variations in records throughout the years - McWhirter, McWhorter, Mewhirter, Mewhorter, etc.

 

William MCWHORTER was born about 1748.  It is believed he was the son of Robert McWhorter and Sarah Johnston of Pennsylvania, but this researcher has seen no proof of this.  He was married first to Jane BOYD on 24 March 1768 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, USA.  Jane BOYD died in 1772.  William MCWHORTER and Jane BOYD had the following children - Robert MCWHORTER, Sarah MCWHORTER, and John MCWHORTER.  William was married second to Jane BARR on 14 June 1774 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA in St. James Church.  Jane BARR was born in 1756.  William died on 19 May 1823 in Harrison County, Ohio, USA.  Jane (Barr) McWhorter died on 31 May 1836.  William MCWHORTER and Jane BARR had the following children:

1.                              William MCWHORTER was born about 1775.  He died about 1849.

  1. Henry MCWHORTER was born about 1779.  He died in 1849 in Marion County, Ohio, USA.
  2. Margaret MCWHORTER was born about 1783.  She was married to James TOLAND.  She died about 1825.

4.                              **James MEWHIRTER. (see below)

  1. Susanna MCWHORTER was born about 1793.  She was married to William MCDOWELL on 10 Aug 1810.
  2. John Barr MEWHIRTER was born in 1797.  He was married to Mary Ann REED (daughter of J Frederick REED and Mary Eve GROVES) on 30 January 1821 in Harrison County, Ohio, USA.  Mary Ann REED was born on 17 October 1798 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, USA.  John Barr Mewhirter and James were brothers and their wives, Mary Ann and Lydia, were sisters.  John Barr MEWHIRTER and Mary Ann REED had the following children:  James MEWHIRTER, Frederick MEWHIRTER, and William MEWHIRTER.  John Barr Mewhirter died in 1826 in Harrison County, Ohio, USA.  Mary Ann and her sons, with sister and brother-in-law James and Lydia (Reed) Mewhirter moved to Van Wert County, Ohio and she eventually moved to Iowa with some of her children.  Lydia died on 7 November 1885 in Griswold, Cass County, Iowa, USA.  She was buried in Smith Cemetery, Griswold, Iowa, USA.

**James MEWHIRTER was born on 10 April 1791 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, USA.  He was married to Lydia REED (daughter of J Frederick REED and Mary Eve GROVES) on 18 June 1818 in Harrison County, Ohio, USA.  Lydia REED was born on 27 September 1794 in Pennsylvania, USA.  He appeared on the census in: 

  • 1820 in Green Township, Harrison County, Ohio, USA (page 53)
  • 1830 in One Leg Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, USA (Page 44)
  • 1850 Jennings Township, Van Wert County, Ohio (Household #688)

They moved to Van Wert County between 1830-1840 and moved to Iowa before 1869.  James died on 31 December 1869 in Iowa, USA.  Lydia died on 24 February 1877 in Iowa, USA.  James MEWHIRTER and Lydia REED had the following children:

1.                              **Eva Ann MEWHIRTER (see below).

**Eva Ann MEWHIRTER was born on 20 December 1819 in Harrison County, Ohio, USA.  She was married to Jacob DIBERT (son of John DIBERT and Catherine WALLICK) on 21 May 1837 in Goshen Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, USA by J.P. John Butt.  See the Dibert Family page for their descendants.
