Here is a brief beginning to our family history.
My family's line of descent is marked with a **.
The name McOwen has evolved from McEowen. However, as
has often happened in many families, it is sometimes spelled differently in
different records and evolved through the years in different ways for
different branches of the family. Often our uneducated ancestors would not
know how to spell their name, but would speak it to others taking notes.
As those who were more educated heard it, they spelled it however they
thought it should be -- on deeds, census, immigration records and other
papers. Sometimes brothers in the same family adopted a different spelling
and we, their descendants, find it difficult to trace our roots because the
names are not always spelled the same. We have seen the name spelled McEowen, McOwen, McEwen, McCune, etc.
A lot of the older information below was originally found in a letter
that John Lucas McEowen wrote to his descendants in order to preserve
family history (maybe he was a frustrated genealogist!). Additional
information was found in a memo written later by his son, William Francis
McOwen (it must run in the genes!). Much of it has since been researched
and corroborated via obituaries, census, cemeteries, and other vital
records or descendants' information.
