Here is a brief beginning to our family history.

My family's line of descent is marked with a **.

The name McOwen has evolved from McEowen.  However, as has often happened in many families, it is sometimes spelled differently in different records and evolved through the years in different ways for different branches of the family.  Often our uneducated ancestors would not know how to spell their name, but would speak it to others taking notes.  As those who were more educated heard it, they spelled it however they thought it should be -- on deeds, census, immigration records and other papers.  Sometimes brothers in the same family adopted a different spelling and we, their descendants, find it difficult to trace our roots because the names are not always spelled the same.  We have seen the name spelled McEowen, McOwen, McEwen, McCune, etc.

A lot of the older information below was originally found in a letter that John Lucas McEowen wrote to his descendants in order to preserve family history (maybe he was a frustrated genealogist!).  Additional information was found in a memo written later by his son, William Francis McOwen (it must run in the genes!).  Much of it has since been researched and corroborated via obituaries, census, cemeteries, and other vital records or descendants' information.

**John "Joseph" MCEOWEN was born in November 1810.  His birthplace was listed in the 1850 census as Ohio.  However, his son William's later census information lists father's birthplace as West Virginia.  John Joseph was married to Drucilla FIELDS.  Drucilla was born on 22 June 1821.  She had been married before (FIELDS) and had one son and one daughter.  There is some talk that Joseph had also been married previously, but nothing found by this researcher as yet.

The family appeared on the census in Franklin Township, Franklin County, Ohio, in:

  • 1840 (McOwen)
  • 1850 (McCune Household #270)

John Joseph was granted deed to land in Putnam County, Ohio in 1854.  He signed a will on 8 May 1860 and died on 14 July 1860 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA at 49 years, 8 months.  He was buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.

Following John's death, Drucilla (Druscilla) appeared on the census as head of household in Jennings Township, Putnam County, Ohio, in:

  • 1860 (Household #56) - taken in September after John's death in July.
  • 1870 (Household #69)
  • 1880 (Household #150)
  • 1900 (Household #202)

Drucilla died on 22 October 1902 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA at the ripe old age of 81 years, 4 months and 2 days.  She was buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  John Joseph MCEOWEN and Drucilla had the following children:
