THE MCCLANE FAMILY

Jacob MCLANE Sr was born about 1775 in Virginia. Jacob and his family came to Pickaway County, Ohio, USA around 1810 and located on the south side of a creek and both he and his wife died there. Jacob died on 20 August 1857. 

1. Zachariah MCLANE was born about 1800.  He was married to Susan SPAUR (daughter of Valentine SPAHR and Anna Margaret RICHER) on 24 October 1817 in Pickaway County, Ohio, USA by Abe Christ, JP. Susan was born 2 July 1797 in Pennsylvania.  Zachariah and Susan's children were:  Susanna MCLANE and Washington MCLANE.

3. Jacob MCLANE Jr was was married to Mary Ann Reed on 1 November 1838 in Pickaway County, Ohio.  He died in 1850 in Licking County, Ohio, USA. 
4. Nancy Ann MCLANE was born about 1790 in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia, USA.  She was married to Philip YOUNG (son of Charles YOUNG and Catherine Elizabeth KINT) in 1817. Philip YOUNG was born on 16 October 1787 in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia, USA.  They eventually moved to Shelby County, Ohio.  She died in 1826.  He died on 29 May 1850 in Shelby County, Ohio, USA. Nancy Ann MCLANE and Philip YOUNG had the following children:  George YOUNG, Jacob YOUNG, Mary YOUNG, Phillip YOUNG, William YOUNG, Elizabeth YOUNG, Nancy YOUNG, Catherine YOUNG, Susannah YOUNG, Adam YOUNG, and Stephen M YOUNG.
5. Elizabeth MCLANE was married to Jacob ICE on 6 July 1817 in Pickaway County, Ohio, USA.  Jacob was born about 1777 in Pennsylvania.  Elizabeth died by 1829 and Jacob re-married to Susannah BUTLER.  They eventually moved to Paulding County, Ohio.  Elizabeth MCLANE and Jacob ICE had the following children:  Andrew J ICE, George W ICE, Minor ICE, Jacob ICE and William ICE.  Jacob and Susannah had additional children.
6. Mary MCLANE was born about 1810 and married her cousin, John MCLANE, on 28 July 1826 in Pickaway County, Ohio, USA, and lived in Pickaway County, Ohio until her death.

George William MCCLANE was born in 1796 in Virginia, USA. He was married to Margaret A Elizabeth FLEM(M)ING (daughter of John FLEMMING and Elizabeth UNKNOWN) on 14 July 1818 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA by James McLish. (George's name was spelled as McLean) Margaret A Elizabeth FLEM(M)ING was born in 1796 in Kentucky, USA.  George was a farmer.  After residing in Franklin County, Ohio for a number of years, they moved to Putnam County, Ohio, where both passed the remainder of their lives.  The family appeared on the census in:

• 1830 Madison Township, Franklin County, Ohio
• 1840 Perry Township, Franklin County, Ohio
• 1850 Sugar Creek Twp, Putnam County, Ohio, USA (Dwelling #85).   

George died in 1853.  In 1860, Margaret was on the census in  Montgomery County, Illinois, living with her daughter Ellen and Benjmain MORSE.  Margaret died in 1875. Both were buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.

George William MCCLANE and Margaret A Elizabeth FLEM(M)ING had the following children:

1. Ellen (Elinor?) MCCLANE was born about 1820 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA. She was married to Benjamin MORSE about 1841. Benjamin MORSE was born about 1820.  She died in Illinois. 
2. Zachariah MCCLANE was born about 1823 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA.  He was married to Hiley Ann KANE on 10 March 1850 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. Hiley Ann KANE was born about 1824 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  They moved to Illinois.  Zachariah died on 11 January 1863 in Nashville, Tennessee while serving in the army during the Civil War.  Zachariah MCCLANE and Hiley Ann KANE had the following children:  James W MCCLANE, William MCCLANE, Sarah MCCLANE, George L MCCLANE, Chester W MCCLANE, and Hannah M MCCLANE.
3. Elizabeth J MCCLANE was born about 1826 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA. She was married to Isaac GUFFY (son of John McDowell GUFFY and Pamela PUNTENNEY) on 5 May 1853 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA as his second wife. Isaac GUFFY was born on 22 November 1806 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA.  He had several children with his first wife.  Elizabeth died in Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas, USA. Isaac died 2 February 1885 in Nemaha County, Kansas, USA.  Elizabeth MCCLANE and Isaacy GUFFY had the following known children: Henry GUFFY, Margaret A GUFFY, Zachariah GUFFY, Matilda E GUFFY, and Elizabeth Jane GUFFY.

5. Jacob M MCCLANE was born on 27 January 1835 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA.  He was married to Sarah Jane MCCAFERTY (daughter of James MCCAFERTY and Elisa Ellen MORRIS) on 27 September 1855 in Allen County, Ohio, USA by H. H. Reeder, JP. Sarah Jane MCCAFERTY was born in June 1840 in Lafayette, Allen County, Ohio, USA. Jacob died on 17 January 1918 in Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas, USA.  Sarah died on 17 May 1918 in Chanute.  Jacob and Sarah Jane's known children included George Miller MCCLANE, John H MCCLANE, Elizabeth Alice MCCLANE, Jacob Edwin (Ed) MCCLANE, Mary J (Mame) MCCLANE, Charles MCCLANE, Walter MCCLANE, and Ella M MCCLANE.
6. Margaret A MCCLANE was born on 5 June 1838 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA. County history says that she was married twice and had two children.  She was married to John HARDY on 5 June 1856 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. John HARDY was born about 1830 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. He died in Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  She died on 8 June 1856 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA.

William Fleming MCCLANE was born on 24 October 1828 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA. William came to Putnam county in 1850, while yet a single man, and for a year worked out by the month; he then rented land and farmed as a tenant for three or four years; next bought forty acres of unimproved land.  He was married to Elizabeth GUFFY (daughter of John McDowell GUFFY and Nancy Ann PENNINGTON) on 11 January 1855 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. Elizabeth GUFFY was born on 20 February 1830 in Franklin County, Ohio, USA.  The family appeared on the census in Sugar Creek Township, Putnam County, Ohio in:

A Putnam County history states....""He is now a prominent farmer, takes much interest in public affairs, has served as township trustee and in some of the minor offices. In politics he is a republican, and he and wife are members of the Christian church, moving in the best circles of the society of the township."  William and Elizabeth offered their home for beginning meetings which eventually led to the establishment of the Ottawa River Church, for which they donated the land as well as land for the cemetery. 

Elizabeth died on 31 March 1912 at the McClane Homestead, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  William died on 9 October 1918 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. Both were buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.

William Fleming MCCLANE and Elizabeth GUFFY had the following children:

1. George MCCLANE was born on 20 September 1855 in Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA. He died on 27 February 1944 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. He was buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  No known marriage.
2. John "James" MCCLANE (see below)
3. Margaret Ann MCCLANE was born on 10 April 1862 in Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA. She was married to George B SYFERT (son of Abraham SYFERT and Permelia CLEVENGER) on 12 November 1885 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. George B SYFERT was born on 8 February 1864 in Union Township, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  The family appeared on the U.S. census in 1900 and 1910 in Sugar Creek Township, Putnam County, Ohio, then in Ottawa Township, Allen County, Ohio in 1920.  Margaret died on 2 July 1945 in Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA after an illness of several years. She was buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  George died on 30 January 1960 in Lima, Allen County, Ohio, USA.  He was buried in Reynolds Cemetery, Putnam County, Ohio, USA. He was a farmer. Their children include Ella E SYFERT, Myrtle Mae SYFERT, William F SYFERT, and Oliver C SYFERT.
4. Ellanora Jane MCCLANE was born on 6 August 1865 in Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  She was married first to John CLEVENGER on 12 November 1885 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. John CLEVENGER was born in 1862 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. He died on 23 September 1888 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. He was buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA. No children from this marriage.  She was married second to John A HUNT about 1890. John A HUNT was born in 1863 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. John died in 1897 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. He was buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  Ellanora died on 15 June 1959 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. She was buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  Children include John "William" Hunt and James Clarence (Shine) Hunt.

**John "James" MCCLANE was born on 13 November 1857 in Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA. He was married first to Emma Isabelle DINSMORE (daughter of William S DINSMORE Jr and Jane H NEEVE/NEAVE) on 15 April 1880 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. Emma Isabelle DINSMORE was born on 1 April 1861 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  She died on 12 September 1893 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. Emma was buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio.  James and Emma's children included: 

1. Elnora Jane (Nora) MCCLANE was born on 1 Feb 1881 in Vaughnsville, Putnam County, Ohio, USA. She died on 25 Mar 1936 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  She was married to Albert HALE in 1900 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. Albert HALE was born about 1866. He died on 23 Mar 1934 in Russells Point, Logan County, Ohio. Elnora Jane (Nora) MCCLANE and Albert HALE had one known child - Gladies HALE.
2. Rosa Annabelle MCCLANE was born on 12 Nov 1882 in Vaughnsville, Putnam County, Ohio, USA. She was married to Judge William Roger REYNOLDS on 21 Aug 1899 in Fort Jennings, Putnam County, Ohio, USA. Judge William Roger REYNOLDS was born on 22 Oct 1880 in Kalida, Putnam County, Ohio, USA. He died on 20 May 1949 in Carson City, Ormsby County, Nevada, USA.  She died on 20 Apr 1969 in Carson City, Ormsby County, Nevada and was buried at Mountainview Cemetery, Reno, Washoe County, Nevada, USA.  Rosa Annabelle MCCLANE and Judge William Roger REYNOLDS had the following children: Velma Eulalia REYNOLDS, Yula Ursula REYNOLDS, James Richard "Nolan" REYNOLDS, Colletta REYNOLDS, Delores Glenore REYNOLDS, Sarah Leota (Babe) REYNOLDS, William Roger REYNOLDS Jr., Lloyd George REYNOLDS, Harold Noland REYNOLDS, Helene LaVonne REYNOLDS, Theodore McClane REYNOLDS, and Wilma Rose REYNOLDS.
3. John William MCCLANE was born on 11 Mar 1885 in Vaughnsville, Putnam County, Ohio, USA. He died on 6 Jan 1886 in Sugar Creek Township, Putnam County, Ohio, of brain fever.
4. **Bessie Elizabeth MCCLANE was born on 14 September 1889 in Vaughsville, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  She married William Francis MCOWEN on 19 March 1908.  She died 23 December 1970 in Lima, Allen County, Ohio, USA.  (see the McOwen Family page for more information)

James was married second to Lillie Mae ISHAM (daughter of Martin Van Buren ISHAM and Charlotte GARWOOD and widow of Vallendingham Voris McGUFFEY) on 1 May 1901. Lillie Mae MCGUFFEY was born on 10 February 1868. She died on 14 February 1953 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, USA.  James and Lillie's children included:

1. Gladys Marie MCCLANE was born on 4 August 1902 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. She was married to Norman TREMPERT (son of Herman TREMPERT ) about 1920 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. Norman TREMPERT was born on 24 October 1902 in Delphos, Allen County, Ohio, USA. Gladys died on 1 February 1930.  Norman died on 16 September 1981 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, USA. Gladys Marie MCCLANE and Norman TREMPERT had the following children: Richard (Ralph?) TREMPERT and Wanda TREMPERT.
2. Lucille McClane was born on 30 Jan 1908 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. She was buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Route 309 and Ridge Road, Allen County, Ohio, USA. She was married to Raymond E HERSHEY (son of William HERSHEY and Mary WANT ). Raymond E HERSHEY was born on 6 Nov 1901 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. Lucille died on 5 Nov 1965 in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Raymond died on 24 Apr 1971 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. Both were buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Route 309 and Ridge Road, Allen County, Ohio, USA. No children.

James was involved in lumbering and farming.  He appeared on the census in:

James died on 5 June 1917 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA. He was buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.
