Here is a brief beginning to our family history.
My family's line of descent is marked with a **.
The family name of Koehler (which was German) was
changed to a more Americanized version by many descendants of the family to
Kohler, Kayler, Kaylar, and Kaylor.

Philip "Heinrich" KOEHLER (Henry) was born
on February 18, 1795 in Birlenbach, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France the son of
Philip Heinrich and Maria (Breitenbucher) Koehler. He was married first
to Magdalana SENN/ARHART before 1818 in Alsace, France. Kaylor
family notes have Magdalana's surname as Senn. The death certificate of
her son George indicates Magdalana's surname as Arhart. Descendants of
her son Christian Koehler give her surname as Sennarhart. No
definitive solution to this has been found as of yet. Magdalana was
born about October 1801 in Alsace, France. In 1829 Henry and Magdalana
Koehler came to New York from France and are listed on the manifest of
the ship 'Great Britain' at Port of New York from [Le] Havre, France.
Also included are children Michel, Henri, George, Jacob, and Madelina.
The ship left Le Havre on June 5 and arrived in New York City on August
3, 1829 (59-day voyage). Three families came at the same time in two
boats -- the Koehler, Hans, and Wander families. The oldest son,
Michael, was about ten years of age at the time and he told many
stories of the 59-day voyage. He said his mother baked dark bread for
two weeks before starting and carried it onboard in large sacks.
Having eaten all of the other food, the bread was the only food for the
last week on the ocean. The Koehlers settled first in Potter Township,
Yates County, New York, where they remained for about six years. They
then moved to Holmes County, Ohio, where Henry (Heinrich) bought a
small farm with a log cabin on it just southeast of Loudonville and
remained until his death. The 1845 Tax Listing of Green Township,
Ashland County, OH shows Henry Kohler owning a grist mill (valued at
$900), saw mill (value $150), and a "dweling house" (value $200).
Magdalana died on 26 February 1837 in Holmes County, Ohio, USA. She

Township, Holmes County, Ohio, USA.
