Samuel GALLOWAY was born in 1784 in Massachusetts the son of
John and Mary (Reynolds) Galloway. He was a minister for Society of
Christians, also called a Newlight preacher. He was married to
Achsa WITTER (daughter of Elijah WITTER and Elizabeth STORY) about
1809. Achsa WITTER was born on 2 December 1787 in Pennsylvania, USA.
In 1814 they left New York to live in Union Township, Union County,
Ohio. Soon after moving there, Samuel shot a deer while hunting, and,
thinking the deer was dead, he walked up to slit its throat. The deer
sprang up and its horn tore into him and tore out some of his lungs. He
recovered but was never able to do heavy manual labor. Samuel can be
found in the 1820 census in Union Township, Union County, Ohio with 5
males under 10, 1 male 26 and under 45, 1 female under 10 years, 1
female 16 and under 26, and 1 female 26 and under 45. A short time
later Samuel went back to New York on a preaching tour. As his grandson
Joseph wrote, "In those days it meant something to be a preacher or a
Minister of the Gospel, as their pay was very limited. They received no
salary, all they got was the small collections and an occasional
donation. They had to travel mostly on horseback and often on foot. He
was said to be a very strong man and believed in working purely for the
good of the cause and not for pay. While on this arduous tour he took
sick and died, leaving my grandmother with her family of small children
almost to the charity of the world, in a new country with scarcely
anything except her own hands and a willing heart." Samuel died on 16
July 1821 in Williamson, Wayne County, New York, USA. He was buried in
Marion, Wayne County, New York, USA. A Union County history states that
"Samuel Galloway was a man of excellent character, and was a much
esteemed and respected citizen; all his children now living are walking
in his footsteps, living lives of usefulness, and doing honor to their
ancestor."
Achsah remained in Union County until 1822. At that time she became
fascinated with the Shaker movement and moved to their settlement
(called Union Village) in Warren County, Ohio where she raised her
children to adulthood. Achsah Gallaway is listed as a Signer of the
Covenant at Union Village, Warren County, Ohio on December 31, 1829.
She and her daughter, Sabrah, remained throughout their lives without
marrying, a firm believer in their faith, which did not believe in
marriage. All of the other children became dissatisfied with Shaker
beliefs (one of which was to remain single). They left the Shakers,
married and settled in life. You can find them listed on the 1850
census in Turtle Creek Township, Warren County, Ohio. Achsah died on
30 December 1877 in the Shaker Village, Warren County, Ohio, USA,
enjoying the best of health up to the time of her death.
Samuel and Achsah had the following children:

tree. Matilda died about 1841. Their children include Hiram Ira

Samuel GALLOWAY was born on 28 December
1812 in New York, USA. Shaker records indicate Samuel left the village
on 13 April 1835. Samuel was an agriculturist, a mechanic and a
cabinet-maker. He was married to Prudence MANNING. Prudence
MANNING was born in 1812/13 in Pennsylvania, USA. Note: She was an
orphan child raised in the same Shaker community as Samuel. Some
sources say her name was Babbitt; however most (including her tombstone
and her son's autobiography) say Manning. I have currently found no
Shaker family in that community called Manning, but have seen some
called Babbitt. My theory is that the Shaker family she was raised with
was called Babbitt and that is why some knew her by that name. Samuel
and Prudence were married at some time after leaving the Shaker
community.
Samuel and Prudence decided that the west offered better
opportunities, so they started out in a wagon looking for a good place
to settle. They came as far west as Fountain County, Indiana, and
bought an eighty acre tract of heavily timbered land. They began to
work, erected a small log cabin and moved into it. Samuel cleared forty
acres of this land. Unfortunately, Samuel had mortgaged the land (as
was customary) and, when sickness and money troubles came upon them,
the mortgage was closed and the land taken from him. The family then
moved to Warren County, Indiana, and rented a farm for three years,
during which Prudence sickened and remained so for three years. In 1846
Samuel bought another piece of land in the west part of Warren County,
Indiana, which was prairie, from a man that was more generous. He told
Samuel he wouldn't even require a mortgage, but just go to work on it
and pay for it as he could. Samuel went to work, erected a log house
upon this land, and moved into this house in the spring of 1846 and
there raised their family. Samuel and his family appeared on the US
census in:
- 1840 Richland Township, Fountain County,
Indiana, USA
- 1850 Warren County, Indiana
- 1870 Steuben Township, Warren County, Indiana,
Household #518
- 1880 Steuben Township, Warren County, Indiana,
Household #61
Samuel died on 10 February 1883 in Warren County, Indiana, USA, of
consumption. Prudence died in 1894. Samuel and Prudence had the
following children:

to DeWitt Clinton ADSIT on 19 March 1862. DeWitt Clinton ADSIT

County, Illinois, USA. Their children included Frances Ann ADSIT,
Matilda Rosetta ADSIT, Joseph Sherman ADSIT, Samuel Perry ADSIT,
and Dora Alice ADSIT.
- Joseph GALLOWAY was born on 19 October
1840 in Fountain County, Indiana, USA. He served in the Civil War as

Niederauer and Col. Coburn, of Indianapolis. He was mustered in
September 12, 1861, responding to the first call. On the 21st of
July, 1865, he was mustered out in Indianapolis, after almost four
years of service. He was a farmer and stock-raiser. Joseph was
married first to Louisa HAINES (daughter of Harvey HAINES) on
28 April 1867 in Iroquois County, Illinois, USA. Her last name is
listed Harms in the marriage record. Louisa HAINES died on 16 January
1875. Joseph and Louisa had five children: Ella Galloway,
Wilbert Galloway, Hetta Galloway, Maggie Galloway, and David
Galloway. Joseph was married second to Rebecca DOAN
(daughter of Elisha DOAN and Mary Ann WARD) on 28 March 1877 in
Iroquois County, Illinois, USA. Rebecca DOAN died on 16 March 1910.
Joseph died on 10 May 1918 in Watseka, Iroquois County, Illinois,
USA. Joseph and Rebecca's children were John Galloway and
Frances (Fannie) Galloway.
