Here is a brief beginning to our family history.
My family's line of descent is marked with a **.
Several other variations seem to have been adopted by
other branches of descendants - Deibert, Dipert, Daubert, Diver, etc.
Since in olden days many individuals could not read or write, they had no
idea how their name should be spelled. Anyone who was educated that was
recording names (i.e. for census or deeds) spelled it as they heard it and
thus created many versions of the name which were eventually adopted by
those branches of the family.
Our story begins in the 1600's in a turbulent France with an oppressed
people. The French Catholic church had become strong and was persecuting
Huguenots (Protestants) who did not follow the Catholic faith. In 1685,
King Louis XIV outlawed the French Protestant religion and many were
slaughtered who did not follow his law. To escape the persecution, many of
these French Huguenots escaped or were driven into exile in other
countries, primarily Holland and Germany. Many had heard of the freedom in
America and came here to find a new life as soon as they could find
passage. Our ancestor was one of these individuals.

Charles Frederic DE BURT was born about
1660 in St Serne, France. His exact place of birth and parentage has
not yet been determined by genealogists. He came to America in 1699 on
"Ye First Shippe" with Pastor Phillip de Roucheville and many other
Huguenot settlers and was a founder of Manakintown, Virginia, which was
near the current location of the town of Richmond. He later went with
pastors Phillip de Roucheville and Piere Robert after the Indian
massacre to Trout River, North Carolina, and on to Charleston, South
Carolina to help build Huguenot churches. When differences developed
in that area among the group, several individuals (including Charles)
returned with one of the pastors to Manakintown, Virginia. It was here
that Charles Frederic de Bart was first recorded in the official
"Douglas Register" as one of the original Huguenot settlers. Charles
Frederic died in 1707 at sea off the coast of Virginia at the age of
47.
Charles was married to Magdalena Margaret (Eve) - her last
name is currently unknown, but there has been some speculation that it
is Chartier due to some information that a couple of Dibert researchers
have found. Also, as you will see, their son (and our ancestor) John
will later marry a Chartier. This possible relationship through
Magdalena may explain how John came to meet Martin Chartier, possibly
an uncle or cousin, and marry his daughter. Charles and Magdalena
were evidently married in France since some of their children were born
before the time that they came to America. Magdalena Margaret (Eve)
was born about 1661 in France and died 1720 in Virginia. Charles and
Magdalena are both said to be buried in the cemetery at the Manakintown
settlement. Charles Frederic DE BURT and Magdalena had the following
known children:
- **John DE BURT
- Henry DAUBERT was born about 1687.
- David DE BURT was born about 1689.
- Mary DE BURT was born about 1691.

John DE BURT was born about 1685,
presumably in France but perhaps in Holland if his parents had already
left France. He came to adulthood in the colony of Virginia where he
met another former Frenchman, Martin Chartier. In 1708, John was
married to Mary SEAWORTH (believed to be a daughter of Martin
CHARTIER and Shawnee Indian Girl SEAWORTH). Mary SEAWORTH was born
about 1687 and in Indian fashion took her mother's maiden name. John
and Mary as well as Martin and his wife traveled with the Shawnees on
the Warriors' Trail north into Pennsylvania and eventually to the
Juniata River near what is now Bedford, Pennsylvania. It was here in
1710 where John and Mary stopped traveling with the Shawnees and set up
their home. Various records, including some in the Library of
Congress, indicate that without a doubt they were "the first white
settlers west of the Susquehanna River" (which runs north-south through
the eastern part of Pennsylvania). Here John set up a trading and
trapping post where Dunnings Creek meets the Juniata River which the
Indians called Fort Wingwan. All trace of that post seems to have
disappeared although there are two stones in the Bedford Museum bearing
markings of that post. Due to John's connection by marriage with the
Shawnees, it was relatively safe for him to live in the frontier at
that time. John and Mary built and cultivated a large area on the
frontier and got along with the local Indians for many years. In 1732,
near the beginning of the French and Indian war, trouble began brewing
and some renegade Indians, accompanied by Donegal trappers, attacked
and massacred John (age 47), Mary (age 45), and seven of their twelve
children. Most of the names of those children have been lost. Two
daughters and three sons survived and traveled the 250 miles back to
live with an uncle, their father's brother, in Jamestown, Virginia. It
is believed those five were the first five listed below. John DE BURT
and Mary SEAWORTH had the following known children:
- Thomas DE BURT was born about 1709. No
known descendants.
- Wilhelm DE BURT was born about 1712 in
Bedford Co, Pennsylvania. He was married (1) to Miss REUCHLER
and (2) to Miss WEIGNER.
- Daughter 1 DE BURT was born in 1716 in
Bedford Co, Pennsylvania. She was married to George HEURTZINGER.
- **Charles "Christopher" DE BURT.
- Daughter 2 DE BURT was born about 1720
in Bedford Co, Pennsylvania. She was married to John GEUERT.
- George DE BURT was born about 1721 in
Bedford Co, Pennsylvania.
- Michael DE BURT was born about 1722 in
Bedford Co, Pennsylvania.

Charles "Christopher" DE BURT was born in
1719 in Cumberland/Bedford Co, Pennsylvania. He was approximately 13
at the time that the "Deibert Massacre" occurred killing his parents
and several siblings and he traveled with his remaining siblings back
to Virginia. Christopher was married to Eve in 1738/1739 in
Virginia (some believe her to be his cousin Elizabeth Eve, the daughter
of Henry DAUBERT, Christopher's uncle; many others say Christopher's
wife was Eve Margaret NEY or NEI, who was also of French ancestry;
proof of either has yet to be seen by this researcher). Eve was born
in 1720 in Jamestown, Prince Edward County, Virginia. Christopher and
Eve eventually returned with their year-old son Michael about 1740/1741
to the land that had been his childhood home and settled in an area
north of Bedford, Pennsylvania now known as Dutch Corner. In 1757,
Christopher, like his father before him, was massacred and scalped by
Indians. A new marker was set on his grave in 1920 to preserve it for
posterity as it is the oldest known grave in Bedford County. Eve
remained in the area and raised their five children alone, dying in
1815 at the age of 95. She was buried in Messiah Lutheran Cemetery,
Dutch Corner, Bedford Co, Pennsylvania, near the spot where
Christopher's grave lies.
Just think of what it must have been like to arrive in the
wilderness as a young bride at the place that would be her home for the
next 75 years. Then, when her husband was killed about 17 years later,
to remain and cope alone with raising the children in an undeveloped
part of the country through many years of change and hardship.
Christopher was killed almost twenty years before the Revolutionary
War. We have to wonder what she, the matriarch of our family, endured
through those many years alone of change, war, and a developing nation
on the wild frontier.
Christopher's generation seems to be the first one to spell the name
as Dibert. Our branch of the family has retained the Dibert spelling
through the years. Most Dibert relations (including the variations)
have been found to descend from Christopher and Eve. Charles
"Christopher" DE BURT and Eve had the following children:
- **Michael DIBERT.
- Margaret DIBERT was born in 1743 in
Bedford County, Pennsylvania. She was married to John MILLER
(son of Christian "Christopher" MILLER and Eve Elizabeth EARNEST) in
1772. Their known children include Rosanna MILLER, Mary Ann
MILLER, Christiana MILLER, Eve MILLER, Susanna MILLER, and Catherine
MILLER.
- John DIBERT was born about 1746 in
Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He fought in the Revolutionary War. He
died in 1808. He was married (1) to Ene (Eve) ICKES (daughter
of Johann Peter ICKES) about 1771. Their known children include
David DIBERT, Elizabeth DIBERT, Susannah DIBERT, Ene DIBERT, and
Barbara DIBERT. John was married (2) to Mary (Molly) EARNEST
(daughter of Henry EARNEST and Eve "Indian Eve" IMLER) in 1786.
Their known children include Margaret DIBERT, John DIBERT,
Catharine DIBERT, Mary DIBERT, and Rachel DIBERT.
- Sophia DIBERT was born about 1748. She
was married to Joseph MILLER (son of Christian "Christopher"
MILLER and Eve Elizabeth EARNEST).

Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He died in 1826. He was married to
Magdaline STEELE about 1770. Their known children include Eve

Michael DIBERT was born on March 9, 1739
and spent his entire life in the Dutch Corner area. In 1766 he took
out a warrant on the land originally settled by his grandfather and
then his father and became the first white man to have official
ownership of it. Over the years he built three homes, the last of
which still exists and has to our knowledge always remained in Dibert
hands. Michael died on November 3, 1824 in Dutch Corner, Bedford
County, Pennsylvania at age 85. He was married to Margaret MILLER
(daughter of Christian "Christopher" MILLER, who served in the
Revolutionary War as a waggoner, and Eve Elizabeth EARNEST) about
1761. Margaret MILLER was born in 1743 in Loudoun County, Virginia.

John DIBERT was born in 1778 on the Dibert
farm in Dutch Corner, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was married to
Catherine WALLICK (daughter of Michael WALLICK Sr and Charlotte)
on January 1, 1805 in Pennsylvania. Catherine WALLICK was born in
1781/82 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. In 1812/1813 John and
Catherine picked up their family and left the Pennsylvania area and all
their relatives to migrate to Eastern Ohio and settle in Tuscarawas
County. John is listed in Goshen Township,
Tuscarawas County, Ohio, in 1820. John died in 1824 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and was buried
near New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Catherine was then a
widow alone raising and supporting the remainder of her family. When
the children were all grown and on their own, she left her home and
traveled to live for the remainder of her days with her son and
daughter-in-law, Jacob and Eva Ann, who had moved in 1846 to Van Wert
County, Ohio. Family folklore says that she traveled on horseback,
cutting her way through the wilderness with an ax. She must have been
a strong, determined woman. She died on March 12, 1855 in Van Wert
County, Ohio. She was buried in Tomlinson Cemetery, Union Township,
Mercer County, Ohio.
John DIBERT and Catherine WALLICK had the following children:

**Jacob DIBERT was born
on February 17, 1809 in Bedford (Cumberland) County, Pennsylvania.
When he was but a child, he moved with his parents from Pennsylvania to
Tuscarawas County in eastern Ohio. There he was married to
Eva Ann MEWHIRTER (daughter of James MEWHIRTER and Lydia REED )
on May 21, 1837 in Goshen Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio by John
Butt, JP. Eva Ann MEWHIRTER was born on December 20, 1819 in Harrison
County, Ohio. Jacob appeared in the 1840 census in Goshen Township,
Tuscarawas County, Ohio showing 1 male 20 to 30, 1 female 20 to 20, and
1 female under 5 years.
Jacob with his wife and four children moved to Van Wert county
around 1845. There Jacob purchased and settled on the farm on which he
lived and died, spending his life in agricultural pursuits. At the time
he came to Van Wert County he found it almost a vast wilderness with
few inhabitants and very few roads in the county. He was permitted to
live to see the county change from a wilderness without roads to one of
the best counties in Northwestern Ohio.
Jacob's family appeared on the census in York Township, Van Wert
County, Ohio in:
- 1850 (Household #736)
- 1860 (Household #626)
- 1870 (Household #124)
Eva Ann died on March 12, 1897 in Van Wert County, Ohio, aged 78
years, 3 months and 20 days. A news article written about her after
her death stated, ".... it was nothing uncommon for her in those early
pioneer days to go for miles on foot and on horseback to assist in
sickness and in comforting the dying and those in distress. She had
seen the county a vast wilderness and lived to see it cleared away, and
in place of log cabins pleasant farm residences erected and in place of
heavy forests fields of waving grain and green pastures." She was
buried on March 14, 1897 in Tomlinson (formerly Wesley Chapel)
Cemetery, Union Township, Mercer County, Ohio. Section B, Row 10.
Jacob died on October 5, 1898 in York Township, Van Wert County,
Ohio, at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 18 days. He was buried on
October 7, 1898 in Tomlinson (formerly Wesley Chapel) Cemetery, Union
Township, Mercer County, Ohio. Section B, Row 10.

on September 20, 1857 in Van Wert County, Ohio by Caleb Roberts, JP.
She was divorced from Emanuel WALTZ on October 13, 1864 in Van Wert
County, Ohio. The reason cited for divorce was gross neglect of duty
for more than 3 years and willfully absent during that time. Emanuel
WALTZ was born on July 15, 1837 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He
re-married after the divorce and had another family. He died on
April 4, 1912 in Ridge Township, Van Wert County, Ohio. Louisa was

their son, Samuel FLOHRA, to live with his grandparents in Van
Wert County. William later re-married and had another family. He
died on 15 Mar 1908 in Union County, Iowa. Family lore says that
Louisa had two children. So far, I've found only one from the second
marriage and none from the first.
- Lydia Jane DIBERT was born on October
13, 1840 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She was married to John JONES
