Here is a brief beginning to our family history.
My family's line of descent is marked with a **.
Our Cronkhite ancestors were some of the early
settlers of America. Harck Siboutsen was a ship carpenter. He
married at New Amsterdam (now New York City) in 1642 Wyntie Teunis
from Naerden. He died between 1681 and 1684. Wyntie survived him many
years. They had three sons, Sibout, Theunis, John, and Jacobus. The first
three brothers settled in the Manor of Cortlandt, Westchester Co., assumed
the name of Krankheyt (later written Kronkhite or Cronkhite) and had many
descendants.
Our line is actually the result of a common-law
marriage between two different lines of the Cronkhite descendants through
the grandchildren of Theunis and Sophia:

**Aurey CRONKHITE Sr (son of Hendrick
Cronkheit and Mary Delange) was born on 4 July 1757 in Claverack,
Dutchess County, New York, USA. He served in the Revolutionary War in
the Albany County Militia--Fourteenth Regiment - Colonel John
Knickerbacker; Colonel Peter Yates; Lieut. Col. John Van Rensselaer;
Adjutant Jacob Van Valkenbergh. He appeared on the census in Hoosick,
Rensselaer County, New York, USA in 1790, 1800, and 1810. Aurey was
married to Phebe CRANKHEIT (daughter of Jacob CRANCKHEIT and Anna
FERGUSON) on 13 April 1776. Phebe CRANKHEIT was born in 1758 in
New York, USA. Phebe appeared as head of household on the census in
1820 in Hoosick, Rensselaer County, New York, USA. Aurey CRONKHITE Sr
and Phebe CRANKHEIT had the following children:
1.
Jacob CRONKHITE was born on 11 July 1778.
2.

3.
Anna CRONKHITE was born on 25 April 1781.
4.
Henry A CRONKHITE was born on 28 February 1783.
5.

6.

7.
Alcha CRONKHITE was born on 12 November 1789.
8.
Deborah CRONKHITE was born in 1791.
9.
Aury CRONKHITE Jr was born on 12 June 1794.
10.
Hannah CRONKHITE was born on 19 August 1798.
Shortly after his marriage to Phebe, Aurey also
took as his common-law wife Phebe's younger sister, Anna/Annye, our
female ancestor. It is said that he built a house for Anna just across
the road from where he lived with Phebe. He must have divided his time
equally and impartially between his two wives as is evident from the
dates of birth for both sets of children. Check out a couple of them:
Phebe’s daughter Mary was born only about one month after Levi, son of
Anna; Phebe's daughter Hannah and Anna's daughter Sally were born only
eight days apart. It is said that Aurey supported both families well
and made mention of them in his will. Having two wives was probably
not considered nearly as scandalous among the Dutch of his time.
Evidently the arrangement was with the consent of both sisters. In
fact, Phebe named her first daughter Anna.
**Annye CRANCKEIT

future. Abram, the oldest, chose to stay in New York, but many others
of the family went west and Anna went with them. They briefly stayed
in Hamilton County, Ohio near Cincinnati and then moved on to Warren
County, Indiana. Anna lived the latter years of her life with her son,
Levi, and his family. She died on 30 March 1851 in West Lebanon,
