James Lapointe

James, Jacobus, Onesime, Onezime are all the same given name... James. LaPointe, Lapoint, Lapointe, and La Pointe are variations in the surname. Godard is the origional surname for my great great grandfather's family. Lapointe is the "dit" name.

Jacobus Lapointe had a sister Helena Lemay. Jacobus Lapointe was married to Matilda Brier. Jacobus Lapointe was age 79 when he died. From Catholic Church records in Chippewa County Michigan.

From St Janvier de Mirabel, Terrebonne marriage repetoire: Onesime Godard son of Joseph Godard and Adeline Hamel married 19 July 1881 Mathilde Briere daughter of Guillaume Briere and Virginie Gascon.

Per Tanguay volume 7 a dit for Lapointe is Godard.

From the county of Terrebonne marriage repetoire Joseph Godard dit Lapointe son of Joseph Godard and Therese Forget married 22 July 1851 Adeline Hamel daughter of Jean Baptiste Hamel and deceased Archange Forget at St Janvier. Guillaume Briere son of Jean Louis Briere and Angelique Michaud married 07 Oct 1845 Virginie Gascon daughter of Jean Baptiste Gascon and Angelique Therrien at St Jerome.

James Lapointe was from St Jerome/St Janvier per the grand daughter of James Lapointe

Note: Normally on a census the wife follows the head of house, then the children are listed in birth order, then anyone else related (or unrelated) are listed. Marie Godard was 25 years old this could mean that she was a niece or spouse of a Godard. These records are a match to the information I have on James Lapointe. Telesphore is the correct spelling of the name that appeared on the census (not Pelesphore). My aunt recalled seeing the name Telespore on a document many years ago and mentioned it to be about five years ago.

Family rumor says James Lapointe had a brother living in Chippewa County his name was not known. I have found no evidence of this to date. If anyone finds evidence linking them please contact me.

Clues: Adeline was in the US as early as 1863 but son Edward was born in Canada and didn't enter the US until he was 3 years old in 1883. The family must have removed to Canada after 1863 from Michigan and later returned to Michigan in 1883.

On one of my random searches, I found a list of LaPointes in Amasa, Iron Mountain, Michigan. The following LaPointes were listed: Alex, James, Joseph, Lawrence, Lyell, Lyzetta, and Markey. The book is titled "A history of Amasa" by D. Peryam 1966. I have no further information.

Clues: The census indicates that the Lapoint family came to the US after John Lapoint's birth in 1863. The younger brothers were born in Michigan - Alex in 1871. This would indicate that the parents arrived in the US between 1863 and 1871. The citizenship/entry date on the census was unknown. The language spoken Indian. The "Jimmy" Lapoint in the above census was probably the "James" Lapoint I kept finding records of at the Chippewa County Courthouse while looking for my James Lapoint.
