   The Story of My Raccoons

For years, I have lived in areas where raccoons were plentiful.  However, when I moved back to Nevada City, little did I know what the word plentiful meant.  There are many stories I could share, but have chosen to relate only two.

It was a hot summer night and the last thing I thought about was closing the slider before going to bed.  Hours later  I heard strange noise and yelled at my cat to "knock it off!"  Do not know what she was doing, but it was not right.  Next morning I got up and had a little "talk" with Frieda...my cat.  Then I noticed the trash can in the house was on it's side.  A raccoon had come in looking for something good to eat.  (You see, the cat has never gotten into the trash.)

This particular night was like a scene from "The Birds."  I heard noises outside like little bandits getting into my fountain.  I opened the back door, slowly, turned on the outside light and was in total shock.  There, in my very large oak tree, were raccoons.  They were all over the tree, balancing and hanging on limbs, some on the deck....EVERYWHERE!  There were big, medium and little guys.  It must have been a reunion of some sort.  Wonder if they expected me to furnish refreshments?  Wrong to think that.  I thought I would encourage them to leave.  The brave ones just looked at me as though I were some sort of weirdo (no comments, please), and others started dropping out of the tree and ran off.
