Alva D. “Jack” Zellner, 93, of 535 Crowfields Lane, Asheville, died Thursday, December 2, 2004, at Hospice Solace Center.
A native of Monroe County, Georgia, he was a son of the late James M. and Allie Abercrombe Zellner and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia L. Zellner, who died in 1982. He attended Georgia Tech on the first Textile Foundation Scholarship ever awarded and received a B.S. degree in Textile Engineering with honors in 1933 as a member of Phi Kappa Phi.
He was employed for 43 years by the American Enka Company in Asheville where he served in various technical and managerial capacities, including Manager of Textile Services, until his retirement in 1976.
A US Army Veteran of WW II, he remained in the Army Reserves until his retirement from military service in 1971 as a lieutenant colonel. He was active in the Asheville West Rotary Club where he served as club secretary for 35 years and maintained perfect attendance throughout all of his years in the Rotary. In 1971 Jack was named Rotarian of the Year and in 1981-1982 he became the first Paul Harris Fellow.
Survivors include his wife, Martha G. Zellner; three sons, James D. Zellner of Texas, Wayne T. Zellner of Utah and Kenneth D. Zellner and his wife Mary Lou of Canton; a step-son, Robert J. Gasper, Jr. of Greensboro and several grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Buddy Corbin officiating. Burial will follow at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors provided by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Tea
His family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 pm Sunday at the funeral home and again from 12:30-1:00 pm Monday prior to the service. At other times Mrs. Zellner will be at her residence in Asheville and Kenneth Zellner will be at his home in Canton.
