"Near New Reading befel a former resident of that town. Samuel Anspach, who is now a resident of Hardin County, Ohio, who was visiting
friends in and around New Reading for the purpose of raising funds to aid in building a Lutheran church in the county of his residence, as
he was passing along the road he saw one of his old friends and neighbors, Carlisle Clum, engaged in felling timber in the woods near by,
and went over to him for a chat. Carlisle noticed that one limb of the tree he was chopping would in falling come in very close proximity
to where Mr. Anspach was standing, and warned him of his danger. He immediately looked up at the tree, and at that instant it came crashing
down, too suddenly for his escape. He was struck in the head and face by the limb, which cut, or tore down the skin from the right side of
the face, taking off half the eye brow and eye lid, and skinning the cheek fearfully also breaking several bones. He was knocked senseless
and although the accident happened about 11 o'clock a.m. the wounded man was not restored to consciousness until after 3 o'clock p. m. The
patient is under the surgical and medical care of Dr. J. H. Willhard, who is giving the case close attention, and from whom we learn that
the sufferer is doing as well as could be expected, and hopes to bring him out right. - It was supposed that his injuries wo'd prove fatal.
As soon as the accident occurred Mr. Clum started to the nearest neighbors for assistance to remove Mr. Anspach. While he was absent a
young man by the name of Jordan came along, and seeing the body of a man lying on the ground with his head in a pool of blood, and
apparently dead, supposed a foul murder had been committed; the next thought was that if he was discovered near the body he would be
suspected of committing the deed, and he passed swiftly by and onward. No doubt it was a relief to his mind to learn how the man came to be
lying there wounded, bleeding and alone."
Samuel Anspach and Esther Garrison had the following children:
