Notes from Janet Doyle Dau of John HOOPER (1805 Horsington, Somerset -1892 Taita , Lower Hutt) and Jane THOMAS (d. abt 1838 Horsington, Somerset) Eliza was probably blue eyed, fair and tall (her father wa s aleast 6ft 4in) and apparently very beautiful. Eliza's father and hiswife Caroline WADMAN brought the fam ily to NZ and settled first inPetone, and then Taita, nort h of Christ Church. There was no schoolin Taita until 186 1 so she was probably kept busy helping her motherwith dom estic duties, as more children were born to John and Caroline. Eliza and George started married life living in a punga wha re andthen George built a house on his land at Taita. George Whiteman foundout she was having an affair and tha t she was pregnant for theseventh time, to another man. S on John remembers a man calledSCRIMSHAW, on several occasi ons climbing in her window when Georgewas away. George wa s furious and ordered his wife to leave the houseimmediate ly. Eliza took her youngest son Henry aged about 14 months old with her. Left her family late 1861 or early 1862 a nd movedto Wanganui. Later she worked as a nursemaid o n a boat toChristchurch. Aug 1862 - now 8 months pregnant and with a man calledStep hen AVERY worked as servants for Harry Rainy Parker, an ear lySouth Canterbury Runholder at Elephant Hill homestead . (betweenWaimate and Kurow, just north of the Waitaki ri ver (north-west ofOamaru) Eliza's seventh son Arthur Aver y was born 23 Aug 1862.
1896 - came back to Upper Hutt and wanted to make a home wi th sonFrancis, but he refused. Son John felt so bitter to wards his motherthat he did not want to let her in the hou se, but his wife Jane said"John, she is your mother, you c an't do that to her" so she stayedfor a week or more, the n went away and was never heard from again.
