Notes from Janet Doyle Son of Francis Whiteman (b. 1799 Udimore,Sussex, d. 1872 I nvercargill, NZ) who was sixth in the family of 11of Willi am and Mary Whiteman. The family farmed at Udimore, near Rye, Sussex. Francis a widower and sheepfarmer aged 40 George joinedhis father as Francis Whiteman and Sons, pit- sawyers located on theWaiwhetu stream or further up the Hu tt. They moved north to Taita.Abt 1846 George was out pi g-hunting and discovered a valley. Hereported it to Gover nor Sir George Grey. He had pick of the first 20blocks, s urveyed in 1846. He nominated a section in the valley whe na land grant fell due for services in the Maori wars. Geo rge had beenin the party which tramped through the bush fr om Taita to theParemata redoubt when Te Rauparaha was on K apiti. The grant was inthe name of his father and and wa s granted in 1847. George took upthe first State Advances loan - alongside hi s name it is numbered onein the books.
George had sawmills on his own land in Whitemans Valley an d at otherlocations. He was often away.
George assisted his daughter in law Matilda Jane on the far m, but asa sheepman, he insisted he couldn't do any milkin g. Was good with agun if provisions ran low. He had a fi rm attitude to shooting - itwas only for meeting needs, no t for sport.
