WHITEMANS VALLEY ---------------- He was awidower and sheepfarm er,aged 40,and he had a young family with himwhen he arriv ed at Wellington in the ship Gertrude in 1841.He wasFranci s Whiteman, who came ashore with two sons,George,13. and William,7,and a daughter,Jane 9.Descendants understood the Whi temanscame from somewhere near the site of the Battle of H astings, and thatwas so.Udimore, near Rye,Sussex,is in Hasti ngs country,on a risebetween two valleys in which the rive rs Brede and Tillinghamrun.Parish records indicate that th e population of Udimore in 1841was 480.Whiteman farms wer e known by such names as Hounster,Cross andStocks.Church r egisters show Francis Whiteman, son of William and MaryWhit eman,as sixth in a family of 11. Besides a youngerbrother Spencer deported for smug gling in 1828,three other Whitemansfrom Udimore are record ed as having sailed to New South Wales in1842,in the shi p Neptune Trader, and having settled in Camden, nearSydney.D escendants have been traced.Although he left a daughter i nUdimore, and the name Spencer has been carried on in the f amily, thedeportee has not been tracked since he began to s erve his sentence. The UDIMORE CHRONICLE,in an issue raising funds fo r roofrestoration at the parish church, reported that the q uiet situationand access to the sea of the area made it id eal for smuggling.Sunkenroadways led down to the old shor e line, and Dumb Woman`s Lane was adeep cutting for most o f its length. The Whitemans andanother family led a gang of smu gglers who met at the RedLion,Brede. The top of Dumb Woman` s Lane was known as Whiteman`sCorner. In 1827 a battle betw een Customs men and smugglers atFairlight, six miles from U dimore, resulted in three smugglers beingkilled and severa l others wounded. The following yearSpencer Whiteman, two of the Mi ller family and five others wereindicted at Horsham Assize s for armed assembly for the purpose ofsmuggling. They wer e committed for trial at the Old Bailey where theywere sen tenced to death. This was commuted to transportation, and the ywere sent to Tasmania. It was reported that Spencer Whitem an left achild in the care of John Whiteman of Stocks. InWellington,Francis Whiteman was soon confronti ng the only optionsavailable to manual workers:road buildi ng or forest felling.Theforest at hand was in the great va lley behind Petone beach. An obvioussite for sawmills was o n the river,or on a tributary. The Waiwhetustream, navigabl e then, became the sawmilling strip of earlyWellington. When his sons joined him on the job it was asFra ncis Whiteman and Sons, pitsawyers located on the Waiahwtu s treamor further up the Hutt,in the days when scows could f ind their way tothe Hutt Bridge. The river was ideal for mo ving timber into theharbour;the market was across the harb our basin. With theirbush felling and milling, the Whiteman s moved north to Taita,at theentrance to the gorge that is olated northern valley fromsouthern.About 1846 some of th e family were pig-hunting,out of Stokesvalley in the Tait a gorge.George is credited with being thepig-hunter,but h e could have been accompanied by his father, possiblyby hi s 12 year old brother.Following a pig over the hills,Georg efound himself in a valley east of the Hutt and parallel t o it,butsmaller and higher. And no one knew it was there.Ge orge Whiteman hadsufficient confidence in a genuine discov ery to report the find tothe Governor,Sir George Grey. In the militia during the landdisputes with Hut t Valley and coastal Maori tribes, including theaftermath o f the fatal attack by visiting tribes on Boulcottstockade, Lower Hutt,in early 1846,George Whiteman had as much service as anyone. The highlights were his inclusion in the forc e calledfrom Taita to clean out any remaining snipers,an d two months laterthe expedition to Pauatahanui to captur e Rangihaeata`s pa.The chiefhad moved north ahead of the c ombined force of militia, armed policeand Ngatiawa. George Whiteman seemed to have the pick ofthe f irst 20 blocks, surveyed in 1846 according to a reference i nfamily records to a "46" peg.The grant made to him was da ted1847,when he would have been 19.With his father he ha d cleared someland,as required in a condition of the grant ,and had erected adwelling-a punga whare. It was the firs t in a succession of dwellingserected by the Whitemans o n the same property. A search ofearliest marriage records in the nat ional registry showed that GeorgeWhiteman, bachelor, and Eli za Hooper, spinster, married at St.JamesChurch on 25 July 18 49.A Registrar`s statement described them asbeing of the R iver Hutt,a term used in those days to indicate theriversi de settlements, particularly of the lower valley. No form wa sinvolved. The Anglican church at Lower Hutt was and is St .James.Theregistration of marriage, solemnised (as it noted ) within the districtof Wellington within the Province o f New Munster, set out that thecouple were " married by ban ns with consent of parents".In theregistration no ages wer e required,or details of parents. The brideand bridegroom s upplied a mark, witnessed,it seemed,by I A Petherickand Wil liam Coching. A son,John, was born at Taita in1850.One of the f irst events in his life, according to one report, washis res cue in an earthquake from the upper storey of "the shakin ghome then occupied by the family.".
