WILL PROBATE: Shirlie Filed 1886 IN(Invercargill) No 234 From KeownShirley:-The Shirleys first leased land in Rive r Road, The Hutt(Taita) and like all early settlers had t o be self sufficient. Fromrecords they were described as l abourer, sawyers, market gardenersand farmers. In 1853 Matthew was granted 8 acres 16 perches by the NZco mpany. His father was granted a similar adjoining block. Th is 17acres is now part of Lower Hutt City and stretches fr om the VICcorner to near the present hospital, and was cov ered in bush. 1856This must have been a traumatic time as they were inv olved in a Maoriskirmiish. Both blocks of land were sold . Matthews parents ThomasandAnn, with his brothers and sis ters moved to a farm at Puketapunear Napier. Thomas had re ceived 100 pounds for his sale. Matthew andJane with thei r 3 children moved to lease land at Upper Hutt. 1860Matthew,his eldest son James, now 13 and Thomas Andre w,brother, whohad recently married in Napier to his Elizabe th, left for Dunedinand the lure of Gold. Jane and th e 4 younger children were left inUpper Hutt with her fathe r Francis. Records from the Otago EarlySettlers Museum reveal that Th omas Andrew purchased horses and wagonsand became a provid er of supplies to and from the Gold fields. He wasobviousl y successful for in 1867 he returned north to Carterton where he purchased a hotel. He later became a runholder nea r Napier.1860 meanwhile Matthew and young James proceeded to the dig gings atGabriels Gully where it is recorded that in one fo ur month periodthey secured gold valued at 1600 pounds ste rling. 1862.In 1862 theywalked back to Dunedin where James remain ed with his uncle Thomas ,and Matthew travelled by ship t o Wellington and family in Upper Hutt.A short stay with Jane and the 4 children, returning to Dun edin byway of Puketapu to visit Mum and Dad,brothers and s isters. Theysailed from Napier to Dunedin. Nearing Christmas, with all theirbelongings in a 6 hors e wagon and 3 horse dray, the family, nowunited with Jame s ,now 15, left Dunedin to trek South. Then the roadswere spadmodic, tracks were rough, while cro ssings of the many riverswas each an individual experience . Settlers took them in at nights. At Matuara Matthew purch ased a block of land(unseen), travellingsouth to stop at L ong Bush, some 7 miles from Invercargill...Here hebought m ore land and erected a house. The Long Bush land althoug hnow very fertile, was then covered in bush and very, ver y swampy.-andcold. Long Bush is 130 miles from Dunedin. 1863-70 Matthew with James,,apart from breaking in part o f Long Bush were engaged with contractwork, both with bull ock and horse trains, waggoning from Invercargillto Whakat ipu. They also commenced breaking in their land near Wyndham. This land of nearly 2000 acres , later called "Winfield "consisted of rolling country with bush, but laying to th e sun, whichmust have been a welcome relief from the swamp s of Long Bush.Throughout this period 4 more children arrived, making a fa mily of9(??) Wyndham is a pretty town situated in the fork of the Mataur a riverand the Wyndham and Mimihau large creeks. Over th e years, everalfloods have caused problems. One had 5 feet of water inside the PostOffice, but happil y all money and BDM records kept dry in thewaterproof wal k in safe. In 1900 Wyndham was a very busy town beingthe gateway t o Southern Southland. The branch railway line, thesawmills ,the flax mills, the farming, the dairy factory created bac kuo industry.
