bullet  General Notes:

From "Seward County Nebraska 1982" by The People of Seward County

The fallacy of the old adage, "A Jack of all trades and the master of none" was proven by th e life of Edgar Edward Buckingham. Throughout his life, he met each problem, good or bad, wit h courage and determination and with all the intelligence, ingenuity, and ability that he cou ld muster. His formal education ended with the ninth grade. He had a dream of graduating fro m high school, but was unable to realize it as he was needed on the farm except for the winte r months. He was never able to complete the full course. He continued on the farm until 1939.

Edgar was a good carpenter, exacting and methodical. He operated a steam engine and separato r for a threshing "run". He could take apart a tractor or car engine, repair them and reassem ble them in operable condition. In1935, he opened an implement and repair shop in the Danski n Building in Beaver Crossing, from which he branched out into his other activities.

When the Canning Cooperative was formed, he became engineer for the factory. He made a gree n bean cutter, which a reported compared to a Rube Goldberg comic strip invention. Edgar repl ied to the challenge by saying,"Yes, but it works and that is all that is necessary." He serv ed as manager for the factor from 1947 to 1950.

Edgar gave many hours of donated time of carpentering and repair to the United Methodist Chur ch, the Independent order of the Odd Fellows, and the Flowing Well Grange. He was a member o f these organizations.

Edgar, son of Perry Emmette and Martha Jane Buckingham, was born January 22, 1886 near Friend , Nebraska. March 8, 1911, Edgar and Blanche Emma Hannah were married at the home of her pare nts in L precinct. Blanche, born July 4, 1886, was the daughter of Joseph William and Sarah Ly ons Hannah. Their marriage ended one day short of eleven years when Blanche died suddenly o f acute pneumonia and complications of diabetes.

Their children were Alta Evelyn married Elmer Krasser, Ila May who died in early infancy; Pea rl Helen who married Franklin Rhoades; Edward William married Dorothy Hanson and Willar Emmet t married Dora Pratt. There were nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Today, one dau ghter and one granddaughter live in Seward County.

Edgar Buckingham passed away May 7, 1966 of cancer at Friend, Nebraska.Edgar, his wife, and i nfant daughter, are buried in Beaver Crossing Cemetery.
