OBITUARY: Friend Sentinel; January 25, 1934
Charles H. Baker was born near Syracuse, New York, May 10, 1862 and passed away in a hospital in Lincoln after a serious illness of but a few days, at the age of 71 years, 8 months, 6 da ys.
He came to Friend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Baker, when he was eighteen years of age. He was united in marriage January 26, 1889, to Susie Graves and they made their home near Friend until November 30,1917, when they sold their farm and removed to 3357 Holdrege Street, Lincoln. He was a very successful farmer and after moving to Lincoln, he delighted in cultivating a fine garden and orchard, raising an abundance of fruit and vegetables when others seemed to fail. He like to take his friends and relatives down into his garden when the fruit was ripe and tell them to eat their fill.
He is survived by his wife, daughter, Mrs. Vera McCrew, granddaughter,Velma McCrew, five nieces, five nephews, and many other relatives. He was the last member of the William Baker family . His mother-in-law, Mrs. Susan P. Greaves, has made her home in his household and in the 45 years of their home life, they grew to love each other more and more.
The funeral was held in the home Thursday afternoon, January 18th, and burial was in Andrew Cemetery, Friend. Rev. F.M. Sturdevant, pastor of Temple Baptist church, Lincoln, preached the funeral sermon. Karl Stuermer was soloist accompanied by Margurette Aura. The Lincoln pallbearers were Chas. Strickler, Alex Bean, John Beaver, C. V. Filman, Mitrofan Afanslev, and August Gunnerson. Friend pallbearers were F. R. Clark, John Stewart, Alfred Swanson, J. T. Calkins , J. L. Troyer, and George Hemphill. A short service was held in the cemetery and the casket opened for the relatives and friends who could not go to Lincoln.
Thus passes from out midst, a good man, a loving husband and father. A relative beloved by his kin. A staunch supporter of good government and high moral issues. A citizen who, though he moved from his community, was always loyal to Friend and its interests. Just a few weeks prior to his death, he talked with his nephew about financial affairs and said, "I believe I will l come out and talk things over with the men in the First National Bank". Nothing could shake his confidence in this institution. When he became tired and depressed he would get in his car and drive to Beaver Crossing where his sister's family live, and then to Friend, the old "stamping ground". Even when he did not feel his best, he greeted all with a smile. Quiet and unassuming in nature, he won friends and held them. The crowd gathered in the cemetery, Thursday , testified to that.
