The will of John Ransom of Battell, proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1659 lists James Ransom as the "fourth sonne" of John Ransom. His older brothers Thomas, Edward and Lawrence are all mentioned in the will. The birth year is inferred, but the will clearly indicates that James had not reached age 21 in 1659, and it clearly states that Lawrence was older than James. Thus he could not have been born before 1641. The most logical birthplace for James is Westfield, as his older siblings were christened there, and his father still owned land there in 1659. ^{1 4}

James married Judith Blyde, daughter of John Blyde and UNKNOWN, on 21 May 1678 in Hollington, Sussex, England.¹ (Judith Blyde was christened on 15 Nov 1657 in St. Peter's, Bexhill, Sussex, England ³ and was buried on 17 Dec 1725 in Bexhill, , Sussex, England ³.)
