BARONY OF LEYBURN (II)

JULIANE DE LEYBURN, according to modern doctrine suo jure BARONESS LEYBURN, granddaughter and heir, being daughter and heir of Thomas DE LEYBURN, by Alice his wife. She was born circa 1303, and was destined to be a great heiress, being later called "the Infanta of Kent." Her marriage was granted in 1308 to William her grandfather, and after his death she was made a ward of Aymer (de Valence), Earl of Pembroke.

She married, before the Quinzaine of Easter 1321, possibly about 1318, her guardian's nephew, John, (DE HASTINGES), LORD HASTINGES. He died 20 January 1324/5. She married, 2ndly, in or before September 1325, Sir Thomas LE BLOUNT [1st Lord Blount]. He died 17 August 1328. She married, 3rdly, before 17 October 1328, William (DE CLINTON), LORD CLINTON, afterwards EARL OF HUNTINGDON. He died 25 August 1354. On 15 March 1361/2 her feoffees granted to her for life the manors of Elham, &c., in Kent. and Sussex, with all their appurtenances, with reversion to the King. In the same year she gave the manor of Dene to the Abbey of St. Augustine, Canterbury. She died 1 November 1367 and was buried in St. Anne's Chapel, "the new chapel on the south side of the church" of St. Augustine, where she had founded a chantry. Her will, as Juliana de Leybourne, Countess of Huntingdon, dated 30 October, was proved 18 November 1367. [Complete Peerage VII:638-9, XIV:433, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
