King Andrew II
King of Hungary 1205-1235. Married 1st Gertrude, died 1213, daughter of Berthold V, Duke of Meran, 2nd 1215 Jolantha of Courtenay, 3rd 1235 Beatrix of Este, died 1245. No other Magyar king perhaps was so mischievous to his country. Valiant, enterprising, pious as he was, all these fine qualities were ruined by a reckless good nature which never thought of tomorrow. He declared in one of his decrees that the generosity of a king should be limitless and he acted up to this principle throughout his reign. The great feudatories did not even respect the lives of the royal family, for Andrew was recalled from a futile attempt to reconquer Galicia through the murder of his first wife, Gertrude of Moran, Sept. 24, 1213, by rebellious nobles, jealous of the influence of her relatives.
He worked as a King Of Hungary. Andrew married Yolande de Courtenay, daughter of Emperor Pierre de Courtenay II and Empress Yolanda Of Flanders, in 1215. (Yolande de Courtenay was born in 1194 and died in 1233.) Andrew next married Gertrude Of Meran, daughter of Duke Bertold III and UNKNOWN. (Gertrude Of Meran was born in 1183 in Andechs, Oberbayern, Bavaria and died on 28 Sep 1213.) |
