"America" and "United States."
Further research has uncovered additional newspaper reports covering the tragic events of December 4th, 1868 on the Ohio River. These include more details of the tragedy and several reports which actually mention James Condy Raguet and his sister Mary H. Raguet, without specifically naming them. They were on board the steamer United States when she burned to the waterline the evening of December 4th, 1868, and were direct descendants of Judge Henry Wynkoop of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. For more information on the Raguet family of Texas, see East Texas Families: Raguet:
4. James Condé Raguet, b. 17 May 1822, Cincinnati, Ohio, d. 4 Dec. 1868 (collision of U.S. and America, Ohio River), mar. Frances Ann Simpson 12 Feb. 1853. Reading these old stories still fills me with emotion. Chris
