Moreland Township Tax Records.

There are a number of Wynkoops listed in the existing Moreland Township Tax Records for Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, including Cornelius Wynkoop, [No. 164], Garret Wynkoop, [No. 163], Philip Wynkoop, [No. 166], Catharine (Van Meter) Wynkoop, [No. 144], Isaac Wynkoop, [No. 364], Abraham Wynkoop, [No. 355] and Derick Hogeland Wynkoop, [No. ?]. Garret Wynkoop, [No. 163] in Richard Wynkoop's 1904 edition of Wynkoop Genealogy in the United States of America, (page 68), is the only slaveholder in these tax records:
163. Gerrit Wynkoop (Philip 48, Gerret 5, Cornelius 1), Philip "Winekoop" had a child baptized February 9, 1744, Abington, Pa., but no name recorded: it was this Gerrit.
Gerrit died in 1822, aged 78 years. He married, March 28, 1793, Nancy Van Horn, Abington church. She died, in 1837, aged 86 years. He was an executor of the will of his father, in 1771.
Child of Gerrit and Nancy Wynkoop:
400. Margaret: bp. Jan. 16, 1800, Abington church: m. George M. Woodward, of Burlington County, N. J., who died there, in 1850, aged 65. She was living in the same place, in 1868, and had six living children.
Garret's slave holdings were reduced from two to one in the February 16th, 1789 tax records. The Pennsylvania Gazette Advertisement for a runaway slave. explains why.
Sometimes you can recover the past.

March 18th, 1795 was the last time that Garret Wynkoop was taxed for the possession of a Negroe [sic]. Presumably he was manumitted later that year. Garret continued paying taxes on a regular basis up to March 26th, 1822. He died sometime before March 24, 1823, when the estate of Garret Wyncope was next taxed.
