Descendants of
Jan Janszen Van Langedyck.

by
Christopher H. Wynkoop.

The Van Langedyck family tree starts with Maria Janse Van Langedyck's father, Jan Janszen Van Langedyck, but those of you who have read Lorine McGinnis Schulze's write up on Patronymics will know that we also know the name of Maria's grandfather. His name was Jan as well. I hesitate to state that his name was Jan Van Langedyck however, (van is more properly spelled with a lower-case v in Dutch by the way.) Dutch families, especially in the late 1500s and early 1600s often did not have formal last names and this may have been the case with Maria's grandfather at the time. Only time and a lot more research in the Dutch archives can possibly answer this question.

Most of this information comes from three or four primary sources; Kingston, New York and New Amsterdam, (Manhattan) church records, (marriage, baptismal and death records), New York Will abstracts which cover the period from 1665 to 1801, land records and in one case, (Klaes van Langedyck's), a record found in the Records of the Orphanmasters of New Amsterdam. There is also a distinct possibility that Klaes is also represented at several family baptisms. For more on that see my webpage, Defending the Van Langedycks

The most controversial family member here is probably Dievertje Jans Van Langedyck, since there is no record which gives her last name as Van Langedyck. [She may, in fact, have been recently supplanted by Volke Jans who I only added in the last week of October, 2001. That, however is another story.] However church records show her frequently attending marriage and baptismal ceremonies for the rest of the Van Langedyck clan and her descendants, the Mastons, are frequently in attendance at Wynkoop family church ceremonies in Kingston, New York. After months of discussion with members of the Dutch-Colonies mailing list back in 1998 regarding the Maston family connection I'm pretty confident that I've gotten the family relationships right here.

Richard Wynkoop was unable to track down Maria's family, (and even speculated that she was an orphan, newly arrived on de Liefde), because he was looking for the wrong family name. It wasn't until I got a chance to see a copy of Maria's, (very brief), Will in Gustave Anjou's Ulster County, N.Y. Probate Records that I learned that her maiden name was Maria Janse Van Langedyck. (One of the great things about the early Dutch is that the women kept their maiden names and didn't change them after marriage. A very enlightened bunch of people, the early Dutch!) Once I had that fact in hand finding Maria's family became a much easier affair.

Sometime in the third generation, (I suspect in Peter Jansen Van Langedyck's family), they began to drop the Van from their name and became simply Langedyck, Langendyck or even Longadike, (there's that miserable Anglification of family names starting to rear it's ugly head for the first time. It seems to have reached it's zenith at Ellis Island in the late 1800s when vast numbers of immigrants suffered the indignity of having their cherished family names, (not to mention heritage), garbled and mangled by insensitive government employees.)

The Langedycks, like the Wynkoops, seem to have suffered several spelling changes over the years, mutating to Longedyck or Longendyck as well as Langedijk. While it is my contention that they are descended from several of the Van Langedyck families of early New Netherland days, (there were two separate families in existence in the 1650s), only a lot more research will tell whether this supposition is correct. (I know for a fact that there were some Langedyck immigrants to this country in the mid 1880s.) If you have more information about this family please get in touch with me at chwynkoop@hotmail.com. I would like to be able to extend this Genealogy as much as possible. After all, these are the Wynkoop's aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and great-grandparents.

Properly speaking the rest of the Wynkoops belong in this genealogy too, since they are descendants of Jan Janszen Van Langedyck. However, since the Wynkoops, (at least up till around 1840 or so), are pretty extensively covered in Richard Wynkoop's Genealogies I felt it was more appropriate to list only Maria and Cornelis's children and leave the rest of their descendants to the published Genealogies. In creating this Genealogy I wanted to focus my efforts on Maria's side of the family instead.

One final note for potential Wynkoop researchers. If you've read the article on Patronymics you understand that the early Dutch, like a lot of other cultures, followed a pattern when it came to naming their children. The Wynkoops were no exception. From a study of Maria Janse Van Langedyck's family it's easy to determine that her children Johannes, Maria and Nicholas were named after her father, herself and her brother. We know that Evert Wynkoop was named after Cornelis Wynkoop's father, from his patronymic of Evertsz. But what about Garret, Catharine and Benjamin? Is it possible that these are the names of Cornelis's mother, brothers or sister? Only time will tell. The years separating the children in the Van Langedyck family are pretty far apart. There could be some children who died young still waiting to be found.

Hopefully this sheds some light on a murky portion of our family's past.

    Chris
