This record is found in a memorandum book kept by Antonio de Hooges for the years 1643-1648. The specific call number for this item is Folder 7079, Box 31 at the New York State Library in Syracuse, New York, although it is my understanding that the actual records have been made unavailable to the general public. Dr. Charles Gehring, cgehring@unix2.nysed.gov, of the New Netherland Project wrote to me on March 18th, 1999 and provided some background on these early Dutch records: "The documents cited in your request come from a collection called the Van Rensselaer Manor Papers. They were entrusted to the State Library by the Van Rensselaer family a year before the 1911 fire. Unfortunately they have never been stabilized since the fire. We are proposing a joint effort between the Library, Archives, and the Municipal Archive of Amsterdam to preserve such documents. Trying to use them now for research causes further damage and loss so they have been put on an unavailable list. Years ago I read through the documents in question for the guide. I don't recall seeing more precise answers to the questions you pose; however, I will check them again as the documents become available for use." I want to thank Dr. Gehring for his tremendous contributions toward recovering the history of not only the Wynkoop family, but all families of Dutch descent in North America. Without his continuing efforts all of us would be poorer by far without this precious knowledge of our past. Thanks Dr. Gehring, you're the Patron Saint of New Netherland. Chris
