At Fort Orange in New Netherland, June 28, 1656
Upon sight of this my first draft, the second and third being unpaid, pay to Mr. Françoys Boon or his order the sum of six hundred Carolus guilders in current medium of exchange, the commodities (waerden) of Tjarck [Claess]en de Wit making good payment, and charge to the account of [such person] as I shall write you. Adieu.
_______________ 206 The following translation is made from the original bill of exchange, which is among the Rensselaerswyck Mss. A badly damaged copy of this bill of exchange, which is enclosed in the letter from Jan van Twiller, has the following statement at the bottom: "On this bill of exchange we, Brant Teunissen and Gerrit Ebben, each having married a daughter of Cornelis Pietersen, have paid to Jan van Twiller the sum of five hundred guilders. March 10, 1658, in Nyckerck." On August 23, 1654, Gysbert Philipse Velthuysen gave a power of attorney to Paulus Schrick of Repkouw, about to depart for patria, to demand and collect from Cornelis Pieterse, his father-in-law, dwelling at Velthuysen, all such moneys as were coming to the principal and to settle accounts with him. Early Records of Albany, 1:190. On July 28, 1657, François Boon gave a power of attorney to Johannes van Twiller, of Nieukerck, to procure payment of a bill of exchange executed by Gysbert Philipse van Velthuysen, which was protested by Cornelis Pietersen, farmer at Velthuysen. Ibid., 1:46. Velthuysen, or Veldhuizen, is a hamlet near Ede, in the province of Gelderland. Gysbert Philipsen van Velthuysen was killed by the Indians in the Esopus in 1659. Minutes of the Court of Fort Orange and Beverwyck, 2:231; Doc. rel. to Col. Hist. N.Y., 13:115, 117.
