The Denver Scout.
LOCAL MATTERS.[More...] THE DENVER SCOUT--Sent out last Friday to ascertain something about the Indians who murdered the Hungate family, returned to Denver on the 21st. They struck their trail 12 miles above the Smoky Hill crossing--their course being in the direction of Republican Fork, but could not catch up with them. The scout found all the houses on the cut-off deserted, as also on Bijou Basin, with the exception of eight men who had fortified themselves in a house, in case of attack. The Indians seem to have come into the country through the pinery above Bijou and struck Running Creek just below where the family were murdered. The scout crossed over to the head of Running Creek and went down it to Van Wormer's Ranch. They state that with one single exception the entire valley was deserted. The Commonwealth in summing up the result says: "From all that could be seen or heard, the judgment of the scouting party is that no Indians have visited any part of the country it traveled through since the raid described at the outset."
