Philadelphia County & City 1769.
There are five Wynkoops listed in the existing 1769 Tax Records for the City of Philadelphia, as well as the Manor of Moreland, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania: Cornelius Wynkoop, [No. 44], Philip Wynkoop, [No. 48], John Wynkoop, [No. 144], Garret Wynkoop, [No. 163], and Benjamin Wynkoop, [No. 175, a grandson of Benjamin Wynkoop, No. 8, and a well-known property investor of the time. At one time he owned thousands of acres in Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky and may have owned property in Delaware as well.] Philip and his nephew John were taxed for having Servants, which is here assumed to be a euphemism for slaves. The amount taxed is in English pounds, shillings and pennies. Benjamin was a merchant who lived in the city, while the others lived in the Manor of Moreland. Benjamin, too, was a well known slaveholder, the most famous being Absalom Jones, who became a powerful and influential minister in Philadelphia, after he purchased his freedom from his master. It's surprising that he is not taxed here for his "Servants." All numbers refer back to Richard Wynkoop's 1904 edition of Wynkoop Genealogy in the United States of America. Chris
