    --We condense from the Frontier Index, (Fort Sanders), of the seventeeth instant: Three thousand cords of government wood were set on fire by a stray spark, from the steam saw mill at this post, on Friday night, and but for the vigilance of the military guard and timely appearance of the military companies, the whole of the wood, as well as the fort, would have been laid in ashes in a very few minutes......A large band of Arapahoes, under big chief Sorrel Horse, will arrive here next Tuesday to smoke the peace pipe and go into winter quarters. They are terribly on the peace as long as winter lasts, but look out for them when warm weather comes......Only three men killed since our last issue--two citizens and one soldier, knives, pistols, and whisky were the murderers......The head-quarters of the Union Pacific railroad engineer department, are established at Fort Sanders......Freighters are hauling for a cent a pound from Cheyenne to Fort Sanders......The gold excitement in this vicinity, and on the Sweet Water, is raging ferociously.
