Emanuel Dotson

1798 - 1881

Emanuel D "Manuel" Dotson 1,2,3,4 was a grandson of the Revolutionary War ancestor Richard Dotson, and he was the son of William and Mary Franks Dotson.  He was born 01 Mar 1798 probably in Hampshire County, VA, and died 12 Feb 1881 in Clay District, Ritchie County, WV.

He married Hannah Sayre5 about 1822 in Tyler or Wood County, VA, daughter of Benjamin Sayre and Nancy Tucker.  She was born 23 Aug 1803 in Monongalia County, VA or August 24, 1803 per death records, and died 20 Oct 1862 in Book 1, Page 11, Line 8 Ritchie County, WV of spinal affliction - age 59 years 1 month 27 days.

Although Hannah's family has often been referred to as Sears, attributed to the "History of Ritchie County" by Minnie Kendall Lowther, her family name was Sayre.

Emanuel also went by name of 'Manuel', probably because his uncle Emanuel, son of Richard Dotson, lived in the same area and used the name Emanual.  They are sometimes referred to as Jr. and Sr. to distinguish them apart. The elder Emanuel was born around 1784.

Emanuel was probably a young child when he came with his parents and grandfather to what is now the Toll Gate area of Ritchie County.  After he married, he and wife lived on Cabin Run in Ritchie County, Virginia.   The middle initial "D" comes from write-up in Hardesty's History regarding his son:

"Hiram S Dotson was born and raised on the farm he now owns and carried on in Clay District, Ritchie County, and to which he has added three hundred acres cleared and improved by himself.  His birth was on the 21st of Sept. 1823, Emanuel D and Hannah Dotson his parents". Also from information on a death record of Matilda Bartlett  12-28-1873  80 yrs 9 mo - Informant M. D. Dotson

From a family write-up by descendant Letha Nutter Zinn:

"In the early 1800's a home was established on Cabin Run, about two miles from Toll Gate, which derived its name from the toll gate on the North Western Turnpike.  This home was established by Emmanuel and Hannah (Sears) Dotson.  He was a descendant of Richard Dotson.  Their home was built of logs, as most homes were then. Emanuel Dotson deeded the land to the school board for the first schoolhouse in this section.  It was located near the Flanagan line, on the old road to Lynn Camp."

"History of Ritchie County" by Minnie K. Lowther says: "Emmanuel Dotson was born at Greenwood, on March 1, 1798; and in his early manhood, was married to Miss Hannah Sears (Sayre), and on Cabin run where Thomas Dotson now lives, they established their home near the year 1820.  Here they remained until they crossed to the other side, and at Tollgate they rest.  Mr. Dotson died on February 12, 1881 at the age of eighty-two years. He and his wife Hannah, were the parents of three sons and one daughter; viz., Hiram S, John W., Granville, and Lovisa."

Based on information regarding his father William's whereabouts, it seems more likely Emanuel was born in the Hampshire County, Virginia area.

Manuel is showing in the 1830 in census of Wood County, Virginia - 1 male & 1 female 20-30 year old, 1 son under 10, 2 sons under age 5 and 1 daughter under age 5.

In 1832, Manuel purchased 100 acres for $100 from his uncle Emanuel, Sr.  The tract was located at Duckworth on the divide between the waters of Arnold Creek (Wilhelm Creek) and Hughes River (Dotson Run), Wood County Deed Book 8 page 248.  This tract was sold in 1843 to his uncle Zachariah for one dollar (Ritchie County Deed Book 1, page 64)

Emanuel and his family appear in the 1840 census of Ritchie County, Virginia

1847- Emanuel was the administrator of his Uncle Thomas Dotson's estate in December 1847. Will Book, No 1, pages 56, 57, 58 February 3, 1848 Ritchie County.

1865 Manuel sold to Solomon Harper 196 acres on Lick Run.  Josiah Harper, son of Solomon was first husband of Evaline Peck who later married second Manuel's grandson, Amos Asbury Dotson.

Emanuel is buried at Toll Gate Baptist Cemetery North of Old Route 50 just east of Toll Gate which includes the old Broadwater Cemetery.  His gravestone shows died 12 Feb 1881 age 81 years, 11 months, 11 days. Death Register Ritchie County, WV 1853-1903 page 36 shows death 2/12/1880 age 83 old age, farmer, parents and place of birth unknown; Consort unknown; reported by H. S. Dotson 'friend'.  Since the 1880 census reported him June 10, 1880, 1881 appears to be the correct death year.

Notes for Hannah Sayre:

Hannah Sayre and her family lived on Middle Island Creek in Tyler County, VA. Her sister Susannah m John Dotson who was Emanuel's brother.

Ritchie County - death register shows Hannah died 10/20/1862 of spinal affliction at 59 years 1 mo. and 27 days; cemetery in Toll Gate shows 12/2/1862.  Stone appears to show 59 years 2 months and 20 days.

Susan's surname has been reported as Maxwell, Marshall, Markle, Marquel and Makewell. Granddaughter Dora Stinespring says name was Marquel.

There were Markles showing in the 1870 census of Ritchie County, but there were also Marshalls and one Maxwell -- there are no Makewells.

On death record for son, Perry E, his mother's maiden name is showing as Susan Marshall.  Marriage record Ritchie County shows Nov 2, 1843 Hiram Dotson & Susan Marshall by Eli Riddle, per Jim Dotson notes.  In another listing for marriages, she is shown as Susan Markwell.

On death record for son, William Flavius, his mother's maiden name is showing as Susan Markle.

Family Write-Up by Letha Nutter Zinn:   Hiram built a two-story frame home with huge fireplaces at the same site where his father previously had built a log cabin.  Adjacent to this was a cut stone cellar with a two-story building over it, for grain storage, and a workshop. Years later this house was replaced by another style house.  On this same tract of land, at least three log houses were built for or by members of Hiram's family.  The only evidence of them, is the huge cut stone from the fireplaces and chimneys. In 1887 Hiram Dotson gave the land for a better building known as the Lower Cabin Run School. This building is still in good condition.  All this is in Ritchie County now.

Hirams cause of death was pleurisy.

In Ritchie County Court House is record of the settlement of H.S. Dotson Estate in 1902. Book 50, page 497. Melvina, widow, received 1/3 of the estate or 55 1/2 acres.  The remainder of the land was divided in  lots of about 10 1/2 acres and were deeded to (Dotsons unless otherwise indicated) T. J. Broadwater, and E. C. Fox, be and the same are hereby appointed Commissioners, who shall after being duly sworn for the purpose go upon said land of which said H. S. Dotson died seized in fee and survey the same, and by proper metes and bounds, survey, lay off and assign in kind the one-third ½ thereof to said widow, Melvina Dotson, as her dower therein; that the residue of said land, they survey and lay off by proper metes and bounds, into fifteen (15) equal parts, or lots, having due regard to quantity and quality and value, and allot and assign one part or lot to each of said children and heirs at law; and said Commissioners shall report their proceedings hereunder to a future term of this Court, returning with their report and as part thereof, a plat and diagram of said land, showing the parcel assigned as dower, and the several lots as partitioned among said children and heirs.

And on motion of the plaintiffs by their Counsel who signified an intention to apply to the Supreme Court of appeals of West Virginia for a appeal and supersedes to the foregoing decree so far as it denies the relief prayed for as to the 200 acres of land Conveyed by H. S. Dotson & wife to said T. J. Dotson, in Controversy in this suit, this decree is suspended for sixty days from this date, upon the plaintiffs or someone for them executing bond in the penalty of $800(?) conditioned as required by law.

Pursuant to the annexed order which we return as part of the report, after being duly sworn, we went upon the lands in the bill mentioned of which H. S. Dotson, died seized and after surveying the same; and by meets and bounds did lay off and assign in kind, one third ½, thereof to said widow Melvina Dotson, as her dower therein; it being one-third of said land, according to quality and quantity; and bounded as follows.  Beginning at a stone in Flanagan's line thence S 10 ½ W 63 poles crossing the road and Cabin Run to a stone, thence S 38 degrees W, 72 poles to a stone, thence S 49 degrees 118 to a B. O. thence S 8 E 18 poles to a hickory, S 21 E 14 poles C O S. 13 degrees E 36 poles to a stone on top of a know; S 82 degrees E 16 poles to a C. O. thence S 70 E 12 poles to stone pile; thence N 25 degrees E 218 poles to a stone pile and pointers, thence N 65 degrees W 17 poles to the beginning containing 55 ½ acres being No. 2 on the annexed plat which we make and return as part of this report.

We allot and assign Lot No. 1 Containing 12 acres to T. J. Dotson as his share of said land in the bill mentioned as one-fifteenth 1/15 of said lands, according to quantity, (legal descriptions are with each lot).

We also allot and assigned Lot No. 3, containing 10 ½ acres to Amos Dotson;  lot No. 4 containing 10 ½ acres to P. E. Dotson; Lot 5 to M. E. Stinespring; Lot 6 to Alice Ash; Lot 7 to S B Dotson; Lot 8 to A R Dotson;  Lots 9-10-11 & 12 the shares of D. V. Dotson, Anna Belle Nutter, W. F. Dotson and John W Dotson being 4/15ths of said lands to W. B. Nutter and A. B. Nutter in a body they having purchased said lots; Lot 13 to M. H. Dotson; Lot 14 to C. G. Dotson; Lot 15 to Susan Smith; Lot 16 to Sarah Kiger

We would further report that a certain lot in the Town of Toll Gate of the fee simple value of $200.00 two hundred dollars, belonging to the heirs of H. S. Dotson containing 54 poles be sold and the proceeds be divided as follows, to the widow Melvina Dotson, one third and to each of the 15 heirs of H. S. Dotson deceased, an equal share of the same, we think that the interest of the said parties would be more promoted by the sale of the said lot, as none of the above named heirs of said H. S. Dotson, deceased, seem to want said lot as their share, and think it will sell for all it is worth at this time, known as the Cal Dotson lot.
