Paralytic Stroke Fatal To Supt. Godbey

A paralytic stroke, suffered in his office in the court-house as he was talking to his wife over the phone at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon proved fatal to Mr. Stueuben B. Godbey, superintendent of schools of this county, his death following in the Danville hospital at 10:30 Saturday night. The remains were brought to this city and prepared for burial and later were taken to the home on the Mt. Salem pike, just beyond Hustonville. Deceased is survived by his wife, who was Miss Zula Godbey, a daughter, who is in college in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and a son. He also leaves the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Matilda Welsay, Somerset, Mrs. J.W. Thomason and Miss Della Godbey, Holcomb, Mo., Mr. W. J. Godbey, Middleburg, Dr. Lemuel Godbey, Lexington, and Dr. Duke Godbey, Perryville.

He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ephriam Godbey and was born near Middleburg 53 years ago. Deceased was a graduate of Centre College and he graduated in law in the University of Chicago. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

He had been superintendent of schools of this county eight years and his term would have ended July 1st. He told close friends that he feared he would not live his term out, is heart giving him so much trouble. He was a progressive educator and his work as superintendent of schools was highly creditable. His friends were warm and many and he was an excellent citizen. As a husband and father he was all that could be desired and as a brother he was devotedly loved. Every heart goes out in tenderest sympathy to the wife, children, brothers and sisters and others near and dear in the loss they have sustained. Lincoln County loses  a spendid citizen in the passing of this good man. Funeral services were conducted at the late home at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon by Rev. A. H. Baugh, of Hustonville, and burial followed in the Hustonville cemetery on the Godbey lot.

At the request of the family Mrs. W. F. Lamb, Mrs. W. G. Morgan, and Messrs. Morrison Bright and Roland Von Gruenigen sang several of the deceased's favorite hymns. The active pall-bearers were: Willie Hall, Neale McWhorter, L. J.  Wells, Clarence Ellerson, Lester Jeter, W. L. Jones. These friends were honorary pall-bearers: James E. Gooch, A. B. Florence, W. H. Rigney, L. R. Hughes, Clarence Coleman, J. B. Paxton, R. L. Hubble, J. B. Foster, W. O. Young, Farley B. Scott, J. H. Hocker.
