REV. J. P. GODBEY Rev. J. P. Godbey passed away at his home in Fayette Monday evening, January 13, 1930, after a prolonged illness. He had been in ill health for a long time and about a week before his death his condition had become very much worse. Josiah Perry Godbey, the son of John and Orpha Godbey, was born at Somerset, Kentucky, on March 27, 1844. He moved to Pettis County, Missouri, with his parents when he was about sixteen years of age. At the death of his father he moved to Howard County with his mother, his brother Martin, and his cousin, Sam Godbey, to attend Central College, from which he was graduated in the class of 1876. Mr. Godbey sprang from a family of Methodist preachers and followed in the steps of his forbears in joining the ranks of the Methodist itineracy. He rendered faithful service during the years of his active ministry. Some of the charges he served were Liberty, Hardin, Rayville, Hamburg and Forest City. His life was characterized by devotion to his work and the carrying out of high ideals and purposes. He enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all with whom he had been associated. He was united in marriage to Ellenore Bates on Feb. 12, 1889. To this union six children were born, all of whom, with their mother, survive. In 1901 Mr. Godbey brought his family to Fayette to have the advantages of Cental College for his children and here, with the exception of about three years, he has since resided. The funeral service was held at the Methodist Church yesterday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. M. Alexander, Bishop W. F. McMurry and Rev. H. W. Buckner. Burial was made in Walnut Ridge cemetery. |
