John Gardner was born in Garrard county, KY., Dec. 19, 1829, and died at his home
near Price's Branch, MO., on Jan. 15th, 1897, aged 67 years and 23 days. He was
married to Lucy Ann Pearl in Lincoln Co., KY., Jan 9th, 1851, and to this union
12 children were born, 9 of whom, together with the aged wife and mother survive
him. Shortly after this marriage in Kentucky, Bro. Gardner removed to Montogomery
county, settling near Prices Branch, and on this place he lived, reared
his children and died. In business he was successful, his life motto being honesty, industry, and frugality, and before old age crept upon him he had ammassed a competence. He loved his family dearly, and much of his means was spent in comfortably situating his children, most of whom lived near him, and his declining years and last illness tenderly cared for him. Filial affection was too strong to permit them to wander away. They loved the old home. He was unselfish and the friend of everybody. His neighbors and those who maintained business relations with him loved and respected him. The great outpouring of friends at the funeral services testified to the high esteem in which he was held. He did not neglect the one thing needful, but in 1870 he obeyed the Gospel and became a Christian, uniting with the Christian Church at Price's Branch. He remained true until the end. At the time of his death he was an elder in the congregation. He died in the triumph of a living faith. He will be missed in the home, in the church and in the community; but let us not sorrow, for through with the toil and cares of life he has won a place amongst the redeemed of God. His funeral was preached by the writer at the Christian Church in Price's Branch on Wednesday, Jan. 13th to a large concourse of sorrowing friends, after which his body was tenderly laid to rest.
