CHARLES E. SHELTON DEAD

Prominent Resident of the County Dies Suddenly
Highly esteemed by all who knew him

Chas. E. Shelton, a prominent farmer and highly respected citizen of the Prices's Branch neighborhood, died last Sunday in a pasture on his place. Circumstances indicated that he died suddely of apoplexy. When his body was found he had evidently been dead six or seven hours.
The entire family at home, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Shelton and four children, had accepted an invitation to spend Sunday with the family of John Dyke, a neighbor. Mr. Shelton had some work to do repairing a hole in the fence where some stock had been getting out, and he suggested that the family go on around the road and he would go through the pasture and fix the fence before he came.
He failed to show up in time for the noon meal, but the family were not greatly alarmed over this fact, as many unexpected circumstances might have arisen to keep him at home. When they returned home later in the afternoon, they discovered he had not eaten at home, and a frantic search began. His son, Gardner, on horseback going across the field, finally discovered the body in a shallow ravine. Mr. Shelton apparently had started to cross the ravine and when starting to make his ascent on the far side had fallen back dead. An axe, which he was carrying, had fallen between his knees, and there was not a mark or injury of any kind on the body. He hd for several years been under treatment for abnormal blood pressure, and a rigid diet had been prescribed for him. He was 62 years of age last October.
Mr. Shelton had long been prominent in the affairs of his community, was much loved by his neighbors, was a man of strict integrity, and his sudden passing is a source of sincere regret to all of us who knew him and held him in such high esteem. The family have the deepest sympathy of all in thus being bereft of a loving and devoted husband and father.
Charles Emmett Shelton, son of Jacob Berger and Jane Dutton Shelton, was born in Lincoln County Oct. 6, 1865. He was married in 1892 to Miss Sallie Gardner, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Gardner. Nine children were born to the union.
Mr. Shelton had long been a member of Zion Baptist Church and his pastor, Rev. Samuel Eames of Olney, conducted the funeral service, which was held Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Christian Church in Price's Branch, and burial was inthe cemetery adjoining. A larger crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends was present to pay their tribute of respect to the.... (last word missing)
