God hath not promised skies always blue, Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through; God hath not promised sun without rain, Joy without sorrow, peace without pain. But God hath promised strength for the day, Rest for the labor, light for the way, Grace for the trials, help from above, Unfailing sympathy undying love. |

Campbell repaired her own roof when in 80's By Janie Bowen Editor/General Manager Sitting in her favorite chair at Springfield Rehabilitation Center (formally Medco), Mattie Campbell says she's 29 and laughs when Activity Director Gayle Worthington asks her age. The thin woman sitting there in her nice new blue jogging suit will turn 100 November 13. The Washington County native was born November 13, 1900 to John M. and Martha Coyle of Long Run Road in the East Texas community. She has lived in Washington County all of her life. She married Arthur Campbell in March of 1921. They were married for 52 years before his death of hardening of the arteries. There were seven children born to the couple. Two, Francis and Eleanor, are deceased. Campbell is the oldest member of Springfield Baptist Church where she has attended for many years. As a youngster she went to school at Long Run School in East Texas. East Texas is a great place to live she says. Hitting a milestone of 100 years, Campbell says her attempt to be a servant of the Lord is her reason for longevity. She hasn't been one to be kept on the ground because of her age. She was well into her 80's when she would hit the roof of her home on Lebanon Hill to make repairs, says her daughter. Some nuns who lived near by told her she shouldn't be doing that, so she would wait until they were gone for the day to do her repair work. She lived on Lebanon Hill until she was up in her 90's; mowing her yard and doing her own cooking. She has also been very healthy during her life-time. It wasn't until last year, when she was 99, that she had to be hospitalized. Though she can't hear as well as she used to, if she catches what you say, she might just come back with something wise, or maybe a bit funny. Campbell has 18 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Her family plans to have a birthday party at Springfield Rehabilitation Center Saturday, Nov. 11 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. All they ask, is that you bring your memories instead of gifts |
