Welcome to... Dunklin County Missouri |

Holcomb |
Holcomb, Missouri is very close to Kentucky. It's way down in the southwest corner
in a section they call the boot... ...We went out of our way to go through Holcomb, I think I told you that one of my grandfather's sisters Betty Godbey Thomasson and her husband John W. Thomasson lived there. John was from there and they lived on the family farm for about 10 years. Then they moved into Holcomb where he helped found the bank. They married in 1904 and lived there until they died in the early 1940's. Betty's sister Della also moved out there and lived with them. I'm not sure exactly when she moved there but I know she was there in 1929... |
...I had made up my mind I wanted to find where the Thomassons were buried. Della is buried in Middleburg with her parents E.J. and Louisa Godbey... |
...We drove around and found one cemetery practically in the town but it was snow
covered and we couldn't get in. Then we decided the library might be a good place
to find some information. There was a really nice lady there who helped me.We
both hunted for some books with the county cemetery records in them. Took us
awhile to find them even though the library is only one big room. They were on
a shelf in a corner... I went through the volumes 3 times and couldn't find Betty
or John, The strange thing was I found Della in a section of people who had
died in Holcomb but were buried somewhere else. I also found her sister
Matilda Godbey Kelsay who went out to Holcomb from Somerset, Kentucky when she
became widowed and ill and lived with Della. She died there but was buried in Somerset.
I think that all of the cemeteries must not have been included in the
books. The librarian suggested I go to Kennet, the county seat which was really
close by, and visit their genealogy collection. We didn't have time and to be
perfectly honest wouldn't have been able to find any graves because of all of the
snow... |
The pictures on this page were generously sent to me by Margaret Braun. She stopped
and took them on her way to New Mexico in Frebruary 2003, this is what she says
about her trip.:) |
...Here's the 2 main old buildings that are across the street from each other and
down the street from the library and city hall.... ...The postoffice and Methodist church are on one of the side streets... |
...I did have a good time, though! Ephraim and Louisa Godbey had 11 children and
I'm determined to find them all. Thank goodness all of the others are buried in
Casey County.... You can email Margaret about the families she is researching at maggielou@columbus.rr.com If you'd like to join the mailing list and be sent an email message as to when I update any of the pages here please email me at WVMystica@aol.com |
