John F. Rigney Civil War Pension File
Co A 1st Reg Ky. Vol. Cav.

Pension file of John Franklin Rigney, Widow's pension file submitted by his wife Amanda Stroud Bolar Rigney

John Franklin (Frank) Rigney and Amanda Stroud Bolar Rigney were my great great grandparents.
The following pages are information taken from John Franklin (Frank) Rigney's invalid pension file and affidavits of witness and men who knew and served with him. His wife was Amanda Stroud Bolar Rigney, you can see more information concerning her background and some personal information on this site under William H. Bolar, her first husband, and Millard Filmore Bolar, her son by her first marriage. I have all of the information from all five files, William H. Bolar's pension files, Amanda's first widow's pension file, their sons minor files, John F. Rigney's invalid file and a few pages of Amanda's widow's pension files,
however, for some reason the widow's pension's files stop at 1922, Amanda lived until October 1923, there seems to be a few pages missing at this time. I do not know if they've gotten mixed up in the other files, lost files that never made it into John F. Rigney's files or I have lost them over the months. At this point and time, I have to think they were never there to begin with, but rest assured, if I can find them, I will add them. Meanwhile, if anyone needs the exact date of death for Amanda Stroud Bolar Rigney, please email me, I will be glad to give you the information. The page numbers are for my reference only.

Dear Sir
I was Born and raised in state of KY and County of Casey enlisted from said county. after my discharge I returned to my former home in said county remained there until the spring of 68. I moved to Highland, Lincoln county and thence four miles north of Stanford in same county 1880 my nearest PO is Hubble, KY my occupation has been and is now farming from date of discharge to present date no change in residence only as discribed. I became disabled in the army about the fall of 1862 I took a spell with my back I had high fever my limbs ached and had no appetite taken diarrhea and became nervous had indigestion I supposed I had liver and kidney desease from the way I suffered my bones ached sufffered most intensely at times. I then had trouble with my kidney and bladder and it continues to grow worse I sometimes pass as much as 3 qrts of water during one night. I had a perfect horror to going to the hospital from the fact I had been acting as nurse in the hospital at the beginning of the
war thoug I was treated by the Regimental Surgeon Dr. Rife and Dr. Camel both since dead their PO was Hustonville KY. Since my return from the Army my disease has ben continous from first occurance as above stated it continues gradually to grow worse from 1870, I then became so that I could not perform more than one fourth manual labor I suffer with liver and kidney and indigestion and nervous disibility affecting the entire system. I also suffer with rheumatisim extending throug my limbs worst in left shoulder and arm I have also hemorage of the bowels. I think my disease was all caused by hard exposure in the late war I now unable unabled totally and has been for one year from doing any labor. My first treatment after my return from the army was by Dr. Hine then of Highland now in Colorado, don't know his PO. Next by Dr H.L. Barber then Highland but now Science Hill, KY and last Dr G. A Traylor of Huble, KY.
I am as ever
Respectfully
J.F. Rigney

Said Rigney was in good health all the while until he had been in the army some time with the fall of 1862 while on the march from Nashville Tenn to Perryville KY in present of General Brays(?) Army said soldier was taken sick first ______? and was unable to do service but was  compelled?? to go where he could we had to wait for him to catch up he would lay back was not really able to march often times it was rather a forced march he was exposed on the ??? that march  I think was the origin of his disease because he was always extra strong before that was one of the best soldiers in the command was ???? ???? and ????? he did not do good service as before seemed to be subject to spells with his back he had terable spells of his bowels had ??? diarrhea often after that. he would often take ??? spells get down off his horse and lie down on the ground. he was complaining when discharged of these same diseases after we was discharged we went back to same county and saw each other often we resided near Ritchhill in the County of Casey State KY. I have seen Rigney each year from the day we were mustered out at Camp Nelson on 31 of December 1864 to the present date of the time. we were apart some distance then we would get to the same neighborhood we now live close ????? ????? he has continued to suffer or complain of all these diseases, hemorhoids of Bowels disease of Bowels and Kidney disease infermation of Bladder nervous debility his symptoms are such that makes me know & belive he had these diseases he is not able to perfom any manual labor. I give it as my opinion that said Rigney did contract the said diseases in line of his duty in the U.S. Service originated by hard riding & exposer on that said march
