There is also required the sworn statement of one credible witness having personal knowledge, for consideration with that of A.C. Carman, showing whether you and soldier lived together as husband and wife, without divorce, from 1877 up to the date of his death. You are advised that, as you have stated that the family Bible contained a record of soldier's marriage to his former wife Amanda Smith, November 4, 1868, and of her death in 1872, you should take said Bible before some officer authorized to administer oaths for general purposes, who should make a copy of so much thereof as relates to said marriage and death and certify under his seal to the correctness of the copy. He should also state in what year the Bible was printed, whether the record bears marks of erasure or alteration and whether from the appearance of the writing he believes the entries to have been made about the dates given, and when prepared, as indicated, you should forward same to this office. No affidavit can be considered satisfactory that fails to state the age and post office address of the witness and how he knows the facts stated; and PAGE 13 2 of 2 pages Wid.
