| Notes : The Johnstons came from Northern Ireland on the ship the "Corumundel" in October 1838. The "Corumundel" was called up as a Ship and left from London and Plymouth carrying 279 immigrants and passengers. 15 deaths and 4 births occurred on the passage. They reached Tamworth in the later part of 1839 They were protestants. James was indentured to a Mr Marshall for £18 for 2 years. James's immigration card says he was 26 last August and a native of Londonderry. His character references were from Robert ....eint, High Sherrif of Cork and John Quarry, Dean of Kill-a-chunley. His occupation was Boot & Shoe Maker. Details from the Tamworth Family History Society follow. Their first child Joseph was born on April 21 1839 at Murrurundi, he lived only 9 days. On reaching Tamworth James was employed as a Lock-up Keeper for the Australian Agricultural Company. This would probably have been near the Ebsworth Court House. Their daughter Elizabeth was born 2nd June 1840 and as far as is known, she was the first white girl born in Tamworth. In 1842 he returned to Murrurundi to become the Chief Constable, an office he held for about three years. Returning to Tamworth, he followed the trade of shoe maker for the next 25 years during which time he figured quietly in the life of Tamworth. On June 3rd 1860 he was one of the group who met to plan the formation of a Wesleyan Circuit and the appointment of a minister. He was one of two chosen to collect for a minister's stipend. He was appointed in 1861 to take the Census and Live Stock Return for Tamworth district. He took up farming on the flats near Scott Road, Por 76, Parish of Tamworth 80 acres, but quickly returned to townlife and his old trade. In 1870 he was appointed Tamworth's first Postman. He is reported to have had a beautiful copperplate hand. He carried himself with a military bearing to the end of his life, but he was also a gentle man, very fond of children, his wife is reported to have been no quite so gentle. Note. Death certificate says his father was a compositor |
