This register is badly damaged. The reason is
explained in a letter which is appears at the beginning of the book: |

My dear Sir I should explain to you the sad condition of your old Registers. When Mr Witcon came into possession of the Benefice (1856) he found the iron Chest, containing the old disused registers, in the cellar serving as a stand for a Wash Tub, the drainings of which were filtering through the joints of the Chest. The blame must not fall on your predecessor Revd Willm Witcon. |

This misuse of the iron chest may explain the loss of
the older Parish Registers which, when Ralph Bigland gathered in formation
for his “Genealogical Collections” in the late eighteenth century, were found
to start with a Baptism in 1569. Due to the state of this register I have transcribed
the Bishops Transcripts and, were possible, compared them to the Register.
