Photo on left is Anthony
Washam from the dedication page of "Documentation of African-American Civil War Union
Soldiers from Wayne County Kentucky" by Jackie Daffron and Harlan Ogle. Harlan Ogle of Monticello, Wayne Co, Kentucky
provided the photo and he serves as the Director/Curator
of the Wayne County Museum and in the process of an ordinary day receives many
calls from people who want to talk about Wayne County history. Harlan Ogle’s
websites are: http://mykentuckyworld.com and

Harlan Ogle wrote: (2009)
We have just discovered about 500 documents about 47 African-American
soldiers from Wayne
County Kentucky who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Up until
now, we only knew about Anthony. These documents open a whole new
world for us here in Wayne County about this chapter in our history.
I am the Executive Curator/Director of the Wayne County Museum and we have scanned those documents and made a book of them.
I decided that it would be appropriate to dedicate the book in memory of Anthony and
have done so. The dedication page includes a photograph of him and one of his grave
marker as it once stood in its original site.
I have also been working on the history of the 28 "free blacks" that lived in Wayne
County in 1860. This is another of those chapters that will greatly improve our
knowledge of our Wayne County history.
I have found an original will of Garrett Buster, a free black man. The will is dated
1854! In it he mentions that he has purchased his wife and two of his children. What a
story!
You may purchase this book and find more Wayne Co, KY information on

His 1909 will is recorded in

& Jenny. Mary E. Worsham is in the 1910 Wayne Co., KY census, age 56 KY.
The picture of Anthony’s stone, courtesy of
Harlan Ogle, 2004, was taken several years ago when it was still in one piece. On
24 Oct 2004 Harlan wrote:
"This morning I talked to a
gentleman who grew up in Monticello and said he remembered a cemetery on his
parent’s farm with just one marker with an inscription. He said there were
other graves marked with field stones. There has been much building in the area where the cemetery was
and the cemetery is no longer in existence as a cemetery. But, he remembered
this one stone and wondered what had happened to it. He had heard stories that
the stones were removed and stacked in another part of the field. That led him
to go back and see if he could find the stone. He did! (At least a part of it.) It is the stone of Anthony Washam with his name and the
group he was with in the Union Army. We are very much desirous to treat that
stone with the utmost respect and dignity and would love to know more about
Anthony Washam... The sad story is that a gentleman brought the stone in for
me to see this morning and he only has about 25% of the stone. He is meeting
with the JROTC cadets this week in an attempt to find the remainder of the
stone."
