Biographical Note The Worsham
and Landry families came to Texas, then part of Mexico from Alabama in 1829. Israel
Worsham's parents, Jeremiah and Catherine Landrum Worsham, received Headright grant # 5,
(a league and labor of land), in Stephen F. Austin’s colony. Israel, born in 1820,
received 320 acres of land in Montgomery County in the Republic of Texas in 1839. He was
elected to the Sixth Texas legislature in 1855-56, and was in the Montgomery County Home
Guard in the U.S. Civil War. After the war, he represented Montgomery, Grimes, and
Brazos counties for the House of Representatives, in the Eleventh Texas Legislature
(1866), where he helped sponsor an act for the punishment of vagrants. In 1867, he wrote
the description of Montgomery County for the Texas Almanac. His home, "The Worsham
Place," was on the old Post Road to Houston; the two-story Greek Revival House was known
for its hospitality.
Israel and his wife, Emily
Womack Worsham, had five children: Ophelia Frances, Alice Tabitha, Mattie Myrtella,
Josephine, and Jefferson Davis Worsham. Israel died in 1882 and was buried in the family
cemetery on his plantation.
Scope and Content Note The
collection contains papers of Israel Worsham and his immediate family, and those of his
great-great-granddaughter Ella K. Daggett Stumpf dealing with her research on Israel
Worsham, which led to a biographical entry on him in the New Handbook of Texas.
Israel Worsham’s papers, which
are largely financial, are divided into two series: Slave Sales and Financial Records.
The slave bills of sale and receipts (folders 1 and 2, 1842-64) identify slaves that
Worsham purchased by name, relationships, and physical description.
The Financial Records include
both pre and post Civil War documents. The accounts and receipts (folders 3-12, 1844-79)
include receipts for taxes, dry goods, memberships, and services such as music lessons
for his daughters. Of special interest are the records from the Civil War years (folders
7 and 8) which include receipts for his sales of cotton, those for musical lessons for
his three daughters, and receipts for war taxes and "tithes" from both the Confederate
and Texas state governments. Post-Civil War records include accounts with freedmen;
contracts with Royall’s Cotton Worm Destroyer and the International & Great Northern R.
R. Co.; and an insurance policy for his home with the Merchants’ Insurance Company. An
undated item (folder 12) may be a list of groceries, containing items like cabbage and

papers date from around 1975. Folder 13 contains her notes, bibliography, and
transcriptions on Israel Worsham, and a carbon copy of a letter (17 May 1975) she wrote
to Joe Frantz, then director of the Texas State Historical Association, that accompanied
her biographical sketch of Worsham for possible inclusion in the Texas Handbook. Folder
14 contains several typescript drafts of her sketch, with her handwritten annotations.

"The historic Willis-Moody
Mansion was built between 1893 and 1895 in the Richardsonian Romanesque style &
associated with two prominent Galveston mercantile and entrepreneurial families. The
mansion was designed by English-born architect William H. Tyndall for Narissa Wills, the
widow of Galveston merchant Richard Short Willis. Porches, tall windows, galleries and
rooms with south-facing exposures to catch the Gulf breezes were included with turrets,
heavy arches and massive stonework in this four-story home to produce the only building in
Galveston to exhibit direct characteristics of the Richardsonian Romanesque style. Just
five years after its completion, in 1900, the house was purchased from Narcissa Willis’s
heir by William Lewis Moody, Jr., whose business ventures over the ensuing five decades
would play a key role in the development and definition of the economy in Galveston and
Texas. The Willis-Moody Mansion is located at 2618 Broadway St. In Galveston."

I’ve Been Thinking, Historical Account of the Montgomery Area by Narcissa Martin
Boulware. Spanish Land Grants, Chapter 5. In the 1840 era, R. S. Willis was successful
merchant in the town of Montgomery. In 1893, the eldest son of Narcissa and Richard
Willis, Short Adam Willis was deeded five hundred acres and twenty-eight acres in
Montgomery Co., TX by his parents. Along with all the preceding crops and cropland
established by his forbearers, Short Adam and his wife Mary Carter Hawley Willis added a
new product: they turned their farm into a show place they called "Williston".
They raised pedigreed Jersey cattle, sold and shipped butter, milk and cream, both
locally and by shipment to Houston. S. A. And Mary Hawley Willis raised three children;
Olive Elizabeth, Richard Short and Henry Hawley. Sick until death, Short Adam deeded his
five hundred twenty eight acres to his wife Mary Hawley Willis in 1915. Mary continued
the operation until 1925, when she deeded the acreaged to her son-in-law, I. L. Martin.
Isaac Lafayette or better known as I. L. was the husband of her only daughter, Olive
Elizabeth. I. L. Martin was known locally only as "Stump", added tenant houses
leasing the land on thirds, halves or fourth leases. I. L. "Stump" Martin and
his Olive Elizabeth had six children: Narcissa Willis, John Willis, I. L. Jr., Mary Joe,
Rose Marie and Olive Elizabeth. In 1937, the tract belonging to I. L. Martin Sr. was
passed on to his oldest child, Narcissa Willis Martin, the sixth in succession from
Zachariah Landrum. Together with her husband Cecil Crockett Boulware, Sr., she raised
registered Brangus cattle, horses (show quality), hay and grasses, vegetable and fruit.
Some of the horses she raised have won local, state and national honors. She and her
husband and two sons, Cecil C. Boulware, Jr., and Hubert Martin Boulware. Today she
continues to raise horses and cattle, fruit and vegetables. Footnote: There are now
granddaughters, great granddaughters and a great great grandson......" The entire

LA; Panola Co, TX; Shelby Co, TX. James A Stewart:
Somewhere in Texas, A journey of our Stewarts from Wales to Virginia, then
through the south 1635-1994, by Peggy Smith Givens, published:
"Lucretia Stewart, wife of John
Worsham, moved with her family to Montgomery (later Lowndes) County as recorded
on land tract records in 1824. It is possible that this couple married in Morgan
County, Georgia, since Worshams and Stewarts were there in 1817. In 1824 they
purchased land near most of the Stewart relatives between Haynesville and
Letohatchee. In 1828 the Hillyard J. Pierce family moved nearby and in 1831
Stewart Farley moved on the same section of land. Hillyard was undoubtedly the
son of Bartley Pierce, a likely cousin of William Stewart (3). The Farley
connection possibly goes back to the Margaret Stewart marrying a John Farley,
that family being from Henrico County, Virginia. By 1835 John Worsham was
deceased with Lovick Stewart and Lucretia Stewart Worsham named as the
administrators of his estate, probate dated 2 Feb 1835. Shortly thereafter,
Lucretia married Aaron Cox. The Worsham children named their uncle, Joshua
Stewart, as their legal guardian. By October of 1845 Lucretia Stewart Worsham
Cox was also deceased with her brother, Lovick Stewart, still administrator of
the estate. The heirs listed were Mary Moseley, wife of William Moseley of
Lowndes County, Alabama; Samantha Madden, wife of James Madden (this should be
Reed Wright Madden (Cynthia Murray, 2003)); and sons,
William, Lovick, and James, who were all minors. By 1850 and later, we find most
of these families in Bienville Parish, Louisiana."

Reeves County Grand Jury indicts Estes on
8 felony theft charges, Billie Sol Estes - already under federal indictment for
fraud -- was indicted Wednesday by the Reeves County grand jury on eight separate
counts of felony theft. The grand jury charges grew out of anhydrous ammonia tank
transactions. Indictments against Estes were returned along with 11 others after the
jury panel spent nearly three days behind closed doors in investigation. ... Farmers
allegedly bilked by Estes and the amounts include W. J. Worsham, $76,464; L. G.
Worsham, $104,960; Alan C. Hoefs, $49,608, $39,204 and $309,615; Thomas Bell,
$162,144; Travis Lattner Jr., $55,211.60; and Jack Bradley, $31,370.40. Meanwhile, a
blue-ribbon federal grand jury--reportedly called to investigate charges that Estes
gave expensive gifts to federal farm officials--recessed Tuesday just two hours
after it was convened in Dallas.
