"There is an ironic twist to
Mary M. Hacker’s story. On 2 Sep 1920 she married John Henry Johns. They lived in
Christian County, Missouri. Mary’s brother, Joseph Upton Hacker, also lived in Christian
County. Last year I learned that Joseph Upton Hacker was killed in July 1925 when he was
struck by a car while he was helping a blind man cross a street in Linden, Christian
County, Missouri. A few months later I learned the rest of the story. It turns out that
the blind man was none other than John Henry Johns – Mary M. Hacker’s husband! Thus,
Mary’s brother was killed by the car while helping his own blind brother-in-law, John
Henry Johns, cross the street."
Mike Hacker's, 2009, notes on Mary:
Mary M. Hacker: Only daughter
of Jacob James Hacker and Caroline Worsham:
Born: 20 October 1850 in
Tennessee
Married: To a Mr. Jackson,
date and place unknown, but after 1880.
Died: 05 December 1934
(Missouri Death Certificate No. 42597)
Three Marriages: She was
married to a man named Jackson; then on 22 Nov 1885 to Abner Rucker in Christian County,
Mo.(Book 3, page 252, Christian County Marriages); then to John Henry Johns on 02 Sep
1920 in Christian County (Book 10, page 251, Christian County Marriages). So, she was
Mary M. Hacker Jackson Rucker Johns.
Mary appears in the 1860
census in Wright County, Missouri as a ten year old, born in Tenn., living with her
Mother (Caroline Hacker, nee Worsham) and brothers, John Radford., C.C. and Joseph W.
Mary appears in the 1870
Census, again living with mother Caroline, brothers Radford, Columbus and Tipton. Nearby
lives Caroline's mother, Malinda Worsham (Virginia), and Caroline's brother, David
Worsham (Virginia), his wife Martha and their children. The Post Office shown for their
part of Wright County is Hartsville.
Mary appears in the 1880
Census in Linden Township, Christian County, Mo.. She is listed as Mary Jackson, age 29,
widowed, living with her brother Joseph Upton Hacker and with her mother, Caroline,
widowed, who is listed as 58 years old, born in Virginia to parents from Virginia.
Mary married Abner Rucker in
Christian County, Mo., on 22 November 1885. Finally, she married John Henry Johns (born
May 1855) on 02 September 1920.
She signed the death
certificate of her husband, Abner Rucker, who died in April 1914.
Mary died on 05 Dec 1934 in
Springfield, Missouri. She is buried in Springfield's Greenlawn Cemetery. Her death
certificate does not show the name of her father but her mother's maiden name is
"Caroline Washam". The informant was Alice Choate, who was Mary's niece.

reading the notes (above) about one of the people being Susan Chapman's grandfather

had to have been after 1900 which would help to justify my beliefs. If it really is
them then there is a very good possibility that the woman sitting on the left of the
photo would be Martha Elizabeth Norman, who lived into the 1900s. If you look at the

Susan Leurenia Worsham m James N. Cardwell 6 Apr 1873 Texas Co., MO. A biography for James N. Cardwell is in "Goodspeed's Bios in Franklin County, Missouri History published in 1888.
"James N. Cardwell is a native of Claiborne County, Tenn., and born in 1835. He was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools of his native county. He began life for himself at the age of fifteen years, from which time, until his death, he supported his widowed mother. At the age of twenty he removed to Indiana, about one year later came to Pacific, Missouri (in Franklin County), where he remained one winter, then went to Jefferson County (MO) and later to Washington County (MO) where he remained until the fall of 1861, when he enlisted in the Missouri State Militia for a term of six months, and was mustered out January 8, 1862, March 8, 1862, he re-enlisted in Company G, Fifth Missouri Cavalry, was quartermaster sergeant of his company, which operated in Missouri and Arkansas, and was mustered out at Rolla, Missouri, April 13, 1865. After the close of the war Mr. Cardwell returned to Franklin County, farmed one season and then opened a store at Virginia Mines, MO (Franklin county); four years later he went to Texas County, MO, and ran a general store until the fall of 1874, when he removed to his present farm of 200 acres in Franklin County, Missouri. He was married in 1873 to Miss Susan L. Worsham, a native of Texas County, Missouri, and a daughter of Peter R. and Nancy (Scott) Worsham, natives of Tennessee. Mr. and Mrs. Cardwell have four children: Oley S. Cardwell, Affie B. Cardwell, Nicholas Cardwell, Roscoe Cardwell. Mrs. Cardwell is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Previous to the war Mr. Cardwell was a Democrat, but since then has been a radical Republican. He was appointed Justice of the Peace, and served about one and one-half years. James N. Cardwell was the tenth of the eleven children of Rial and Anna (Claypool) Cardwell. Rial Cardwell, a son of John Cardwell, died about 1838; the grandfather was a soldier in the Revolution. Mrs. Annie Cardwell was a daughter of David Claypool, and died in 1856, aged 60 years."
Fri, Mar 7, 1907 Republican Headlight, Franklin
County Historical Society:
James N. Cardwell died at his
home in St. Clair Mon, Feb 25, 1907, in the seventy-first year of his age. Deceased was
one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Franklin Co. He came to this
state from TN when young and has made his home in St. Clair and vicinity ever since. Mr.
Cardwell saw active service during the Civil War and had for many years been an active
member of the G.A.R. In early manhood he was married to Miss Susan Worsham. To this
union five children were born. The surviving children are Ollie, who is employed by the
United Railway Co., of St. Louis; Nicholas, who was associated with his father in the
Livery business in St. Clair; A. B., a prominent merchant of Morrellton, and Miss Velma,
a successful teacher of this county. Mr. Cardwell, for many years, lived on a farm on
Indian Creek. A few years ago he sold his farm and moved to St. Clair where he engaged
in the mercantile business, being manager of the St. Clair Cash Store. This business
prospered under his management. James N. Cardwell was a broad minded, intelligent and
public spirited citizen. He was a man who tried to add to the sum of human joy. His
death is a distinct loss to the entire community. The widow and the children have the
sympathy of many friends who knew the deceased to be a kind and loving husband and
father and a loyal friend.

had settled together in the early days of Cedar Creek, around 1870,
acquiring about a section of land. After Pleasant died, his sons and Grandpa
Worsham built a substantial house, still standing just north of the present
Little Cedar Creek bridge, the house subsequently occupied by the families
of Starlin Blackwell and Quentin Laird. Part of the land acquired lay west

Oregonian newspaper:
WASHAM, HAROLD L. ''BUD'' Who Was Bud? My first glimpse of the world
came on a stormy night at 11:47 p.m. the 14th of December, 1925. I had the usual childhood mumps, measles, chicken pox and colds. My Mom was a very loving type of a lady, she patted all of us on the heads (I had four brothers and four sisters), she said that I will call you BUD, because you are the flower of the family. A few years later, my Dad explained many things to me. One of the things he told me was the reason Mom called you BUD was because your are a blooming idiot. My Dad was a loving person. One hot summer day he moved my bed out into the garage, I thought it was very nice, a lot cooler. But the next day when it was time for all to have breakfast, my end of the table was cut off with a saw. Dad was planning on a rough winter I just knew. So at the age of 12 years a friend Ed Macmillan and a nephew, Bob Beeman, decided that it was time to see some of the world and we took a freight train from the Brooklyn yards near the Eastmoreland Golf Course to California; the fruit picking would be good for us and make a buck or two. The train stopped in Weed, California. It was not one of our best stops because the local police department asked us if we would like to stay with them for about 30 days and have some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches...a healthy diet. Of course we immediately declined, and took the next train in a reverse direction. My parents were only somewhat happy to see us, but more unhappy due to having more clothing and feeding to do again. So I went to Commerce High School which is now Cleveland. I forgot to tell you that I did graduate from Creston Grammar School (not thrown out as you might believe by now). At Commerce I got a job as assistant custodian which means broom pusher. I worked in the afternoons when all the others had gone home or to the ball games. After a few wild experiences during those lovely years, I thought that being 17 years old in 1942 felt patriotic and would join the Navy and help stop all those Axis submarines. Instead they put me in a dive bombing squadron aboard an aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Randolf. After a few thrilling and occasionally sad events, I landed in Atlanta, Georgia Naval Air Station for a stint as a chief aircraft mechanic. In 1945 at the age of 19 I got married. In 1947 I took an early discharge from the Navy and returned to Portland to set things on fire with all my abilities to handle anything that came along. I wound up as the main and only employee of B & L Sales, a war surplus outfit on the corner of S.E. 82nd Ave. and Ramona Street. Now known as Al's Shoe store. I got a lot of clues as to what some of the G.I.s did not get. By then things were not what they should have been with my home life and a divorce was coming on. But not to worry as I found the most beautiful and wonderful woman in the world: JOCELLE!!! And conned her into marriage. That was in 1952. Love is a wonderful thing but you cannot live on it alone so off to the labor market I went. The overhead door business was very good then, however things slowed down in 1966. I went to work in the paper business for Crown Zellerbach as a fork lift driver then working my way up the so called ladder of success. In 1988 I took advantage of being a young mind in a fast depleting body...I told them to put their paper where it was most needed. As I write this I want you all to know that life is, was and can be an exciting and frustrating thing, and that you all were the best friends that JOCELLE and I could ever have. Thank you for being there for US. Love to all...Enjoy. A service will be held today, May 19 @ 1 pm, Portland Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a reception @ Pogo's, 6707 SE
Milwaukee.
