Springfield, Tenn. - Dora Worsham Bell, 89, died yesterday at her home near here
after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2 p. m.
today, with the Rev Jim Crawford and the Rev W C Link officiating. Burial will
be in Elmwood cemetery. Mrs. Bell was a lifelong resident of Robertson county.
She was a member of the Methodist church. She is survived by four daughters,
Miss Cora Bell, Miss Bessie Bell, Mrs. Lena Crow and Mrs. Ward Perry of
Robertson county; three brothers, Sam Worsham, Nashville, and Bob and Ras
Worsham of Springfield; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

James Burton Worsham, former Nashvillian, died Thursday in
California following a brief illness, C it was learned today. Funeral services
were conducted this afternoon at Sorensen Bros. Chapel, Hayward, Calif. Burial
was in Lone Tree Cemetery there. Mr. Worsham had left Nashville a number of
years ago to live in California. While here he was a member of the Masonic
Order. He was a member of the Oakland, Calif.. International Machinists Local
No. 1518. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Geraldine Worsham; a daughter,
Miss Loretta Ellen Worsham; and a sister, Mrs. Loretta Whitaker of Beaumont,

Maude Belle Worsham, age 71 years, died at home of daughter, Mrs. Vernon Cooper on Blair
St., Thursday Feb. 5, 1953. Survived by husband Bob Worsham of Nashville; four
daughters, Mrs. Vernon Cooper, Mrs. Hubert Evans, Mrs. Ray Watson and Mrs. Riley Wooten,
all of Springfield: one son, Jim Worsham of Chattanooga; seven grandchildren and ten
great-grandchildren; three sisters, Miss Susie Belle, Mrs. Gracie Worsham of Nashville,
Mrs. Mamie Bell of Springfield. Remains are at Associated Funeral Home, where
services will be held Friday at 3:30 pm, conducted by Rev. R S Qualls and Rev Raymond

SPRINGFIELD. Tenn., June 28.
(Sp1.). Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon for James Bell, 85, who died
last night at the home of a daughter, Mrs. W. A. Worsham, on Porter Road in Nashville.
The services will be held at the Springfield cemetery by Dr. D. E. Winkle, pastor of the
Tulip Street Methodist Church of Nashville, whose family has lived near the Bell family
for more than 100 years. Mr. Bell who was born and reared in the Wartrace section of
Robertson county, between Greenbrier and Springfield, was a member of a pioneer
Robertson county family. He lived on the estate settled by his grandfather in 1797. Mr.
Bell was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. He was widely known throughout this
section. Those surviving are a brother, Joe Bell and a son, W. F. Bell of Savannah; four
daughters, Mrs. W. A. Worsham and Miss Susie Bell of Nashville, and Mrs. Bob Worsham and
Mrs. Forest Bell of Springfield. There are thirteen grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren, also surviving.

is Grace Bell, the wife of William Arthur Worsham on page 113.

Bonnie Cook Swann and Mildred Worsham Swann; brother, Joe Caner Swann; and sisters,
Emma Swann Thompson and Ruth Swann Simmons. He is survived by sons, Jackie Cook
(Billie Gwynn) Swann of Clarksville and Ray Dean (Jane) Stewart of Ooltewah; sister,
Helen Keith Swann of Cross Plains; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Freshman's Rites Set Tomorrow. Funeral services for William Russell Worsham,
21-year-old Peabody college freshman who died yesterday at Veterans hospital, will be
held at Cosmopolitan Funeral home tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
The Rev. Woodward Adams of
Waycross, Ga., will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery, Springfield.
Worsham died of a cerebral
hemorrhage which he suffered five weeks ago. He has been hospitalized since that time.
A native of Nashville, he
was a son of Mrs. William A. Worsham of 710 Porter road and the late Mr. Worsham and
graduated from East Nashville High School in 1946.
He entered the army in
September 1946, and served in the occupation forces in Japan for a year. He was
discharged in February, 1948, and returned to Nashville to enter Peabody college.
Worsham sang tenor in the
Southern Stylists quartet, and the Hillsboro Presbyterian church quartet and was a
member of the Hobson Methodist church choir. He was a member of Phi Chi Alpha
fraternity at Peabody.

"Virginia Worsham Kraack died at the age of 89 in a nursing home in Portland. She was a retired nurse, born in Stone Hill, MO and came to Oregon early in her life. She was educated in Union Co, attended Oregon Normal Institute, and was graduated from Willamette University in 1901. She taught school in Union and Baker counties several years, and worked as a nurse after her graduation from school of nursing in 1911. In 1918 she enlisted in the US Army nursing corps, and served in France and England until her discharge in 1920. She worked in Veterans hospitals in San Fransisco, Denver and Portland until her retirement in 1933."

of the Mother's was school larnin' for children. In 1891 a batten board one room
school was constructed. By 1898 teacher Victoria Worsham had 15 students under
her tutelage. (See photo #3 ) She is shown at left. In the picture Catharine Ott
provided, her Mother Virgie Shave is shown 5th from left. A small girl in
striped dress. Several Macy children are shown, their relatives continue
residing today in Baker City. Norma Macy Smith is of that heritage line.
Apparently in a formal photo of 1898, young boys considered a hat a necessity,
while bare feet were admissible."

Elaine Worsham Tansek was born Aug 8, 1920 at the beginning of the  Jazz Age in
Akron, Ohio. She was an only child who grew up on a wooded hill in a home her
father built from a Sears Roebuck kit. She was very bright with an excellent
memory. She graduated from Kenmore High School in Akron, OH, at age 16 in 1937.
She went to Ohio State University and ledged to the Kappa Sigma Sorority. She
majored in chemistry and biology. It was here she met Lester
Robert Tansek. He was born Lazlo Tanscek in
Budapest, Hungary in 1919 and emigrated to the USA in 1923. They were married on
Mar 20, 1941. He volunteered for the Army and was in basic training for the next
few months. Margaret graduated and then joined Lester when he was transferred to
Montgomery, AL, where she learned to cook. When he was posted to the European
front, Margaret joined the American Red Cross and moved to Washington D.C. Upon
his return they returned to Ohio State University where she entered graduate
school in Physics, while he completed his engineering degree. Their first child,
Karin Marya was born in Columbus, OH Jan 13, 1948. They moved to North
Arlington, NJ in April 1948. Robert Michael was born Nov 8, 1950, followed by
David Bruce Dec 5, 1952. They outgrew their two family home, so they built a
home halfway up a mountain on Mac Donald's Farm in Wayne, NJ. Cynthia Elaine
arrived on Nov 20. 1958. Margaret Elaine was born on Halloween 1962. Margaret
gloried in her children. She awakened every morning with a whistle. Oh my, could
she whistle. Any tune. Any birdsong. The woods were her friends. She knew every
plant, tree and bird. She taught these things to her children. When they grew
up, they were scattered across the country, she made prodigious efforts to visit
them and keep them connected by telephone and newsletters. One day she watched a
game show, and applied to be a contestant. She won about $20,000 worth of
merchandise on Tic Tac Dough in 1959. They were transferred to Detroit, MI in
1965. Margaret returned to graduate school with her eldest daughter. She was
awarded a MS in Genetics, which she loved, from Wayne State Univ in1974. She was
always fascinated by twins. She was again teaching, this time in Pontiac High
School in MI. When they moved to Indianapolis, IN in 1974, she began working for
Stokely van Camp. Then Lester died of cancer in Oct 1983. Immediately after that
she got a job as a sickle cell disease counselor at Martin Center College, now
Martin University. She then went on to teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics
there. She also studied and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social
Services in 1988. This is when she began teaching at the Martin University
College which was started that year at the Indiana State Women's Prison. She
retired in 1995 at age 75, and began working on her PhD in Urban Studies from
Ball State Univ. She moved to Des Moines, IA in Feb 2001 to be near her daughter
Cynthia. She continued to be very active in the Republican Party and was named
Volunteer of the Year in IA in Jul 2003. She always looked at the bright side
and rarely complained. She died of a heart attack on Oct 29, 2003 in Des Moines,
IA. Memorial Services were held at Illahee Hills Center in Urbandale, IA and at
Westkirk Presbyterian Church. Funeral Services will be on Fri, Nov. 7 at Orchard
Park Church, 1605 East 106th St. in Indianapolis, IN. She will be buried next to
her beloved husband in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens at 9700 Allisonville Rd.,
Indianapolis, IN. A luncheon will follow at the Orchard Park Church for all

Thomas R. Worsham was apparently a lawyer. In Kentucky: A History
of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 8-B, 1887 Floyd County:
"ROBERT S. FRIEND is a native of Prestonburg, Ky., was born March 1, 1840,
and is a son of John and Rachel (Brown) Friend was born in 1791, came to Madison
County, Ky., in 1820, and in 1821 removed to Prestonburg, where he kept the
Washington and Jackson Hotel, which was burned in 1848. He was one of the
magistrates under the old Constitution, became sheriff of the county, and was
jailer for twenty years. He was a soldier of the war of 1812, and received a
land warrant for 160 acres as bounty. His death occurred in 1876, but his wife,
who was born in 1800, died in 1862. Robert S. Friend was educated at Prestonburg
and at Mount Sterling Academy. In 1861 he volunteered in the Tenth Kentucky
Cavalry, Confederate army, served about four years, and on his return to
Prestonburg was licensed to practice law in 1866, having read under Thomas R.
Worsham. In 1870 he was elected county attorney, and held the office until 1874,
when he was elected police judge. He is now Commissioner of the United States
Circuit Court and chairman of the board of school directors. In 1865 he married
Miss Rhoda Parsons, of Virginia, who died June 1, 1874, leaving three children.
His second marriage was September 1, 1878, to Miss Araminta Auxier, of Johnson
County, daughter of Nathaniel Auxier (deceased), and to this union has been born
one child. Mr. Friend is a Democrat and a Prohibitionist, and as United States
Commissioner has an immense amount of work to perform, his jurisdiction
extending to the territory of the "moonshiners" in the adjacent
hills."

"Captain Thomas R.
Worsham Honored by Dr. Robert Perry. On
Saturday, December 9th, 2000, members of the Colonel Jack May Camp
#1897 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans gathered at the May Cemetery
overlooking the Samuel May House to honor Captain Thomas R. Worsham, Captain
of Company E, 5th Kentucky Volunteers, C.S.A. Worsham is buried in
the old section of the cemetery, next to Prestonsburg merchant James M. Lackey
and U. S. Congressman John Preston Martin. A brief ceremony was held at
Worsham's gravesite, where a new government tombstone has been erected.
Captain
Worsham served with the 5th Kentucky from October 24th,
1861 to November 14th, 1862, when he resigned from the service. His
company, Company E, was the first company of Confederate soldiers raised in
Floyd County, and he was one of the men who signed the letter sent from the
Confederate camp at Prestonsburg to President Jefferson Davis on October 2nd,
1861, announcing the formation of the regiment and requesting that it be
supplied with arms, ammunition, and other equipment.
Worsham's
military records file, which is kept on microfilm at the Johnson County Public
Library in Paintsville, shows that he was one of Colonel May's most trusted
officers. Jack May was commander of the regiment during the Spring, Summer,
and Fall of 1862. On November 11th, 1861, for example, following
the Battle of Ivy Mountain, Worsham's company was given the job of driving 377
hogs from Pikeville to Abingdon, Virginia. "I was detailed with my
company," reported Worsham, "to guard and drive said hogs so as to
escape capture from the enemy."
Another
document in his file shows that during General Humphrey Marshall's Fall 1862
invasion of Eastern Kentucky, Worsham's company was given the mission of
establishing a recruiting post at a steam mill in Pike County. While they were
camped at that location, Worsham purchased 1621 pounds of beef from local
farmers, which he subsequently issued to the recruits who had gathered at the
mill. "The issues were made," said Worsham in his report,
"according to the regular allowance of rations per day."
Worsham's
file contains many interesting records, not the least of which are Special
Requisitions, which list clothing and other supplies which his company
received during its service in Eastern Kentucky and Southwestern Virginia. On
March 27th, 1862, for example, at Camp Moccasin, Virginia,
Worsham's men were issued 70 pairs of socks, 24 pairs of shoes, 29 dress
coats, 34 shirts, 16 pairs of drawers, 33 pairs of pants, and 38 caps by W. W.
Cox, Assistant Quartermaster of the regiment. Free of grammar errors and
written in a fine, flowing hand, Worsham's reports provide ample evidence that
he was a well-educated man.
For
some unknown reason-perhaps poor health-Worsham resigned from the service
following the Confederate defeat at Perryville. Very little is known about his
personal life, but the 1850 Floyd County Census shows Thomas R. Worsham, age
24, schoolteacher, born in Virginia, living in the household of John W.
Powell, who owned a farm near Mare Creek. Listed along with Worsham is his
wife Elizabeth Jane Worsham, age 17, born in Kentucky. The dates on his
original tombstone show that he was 37 years old-still relatively young-when
he died on August 27th, 1865.
My
friend Delmas Saunders has discovered that Worsham owned a farm on Abbott
Creek. In his unpublished History of Abbott Creek Saunders lists the family
farms that bordered the creek during the 19th Century, beginning
with the Herefords, Greenwades, Spurlocks, Osbornes, Millers, and Shorts.
"Farther up the creek was the Tom Worsham Farm. Thomas R. Worsham, a
native of Virginia and a Floyd County school teacher, married Elizabeth Jane
Hatcher, a native of Pike County. They lived in a large, two-story log house,
at that time the creek's most pretentious building. During the War Between the
States Worsham served as Captain of the Floyd County company of Jack May's 5th
Kentucky Infantry."
"Unfortunately,
Worsham died young. His widow married Will T. Elliott, who modernized the  farm
. . . the Elliott Farm was a Floyd County landmark . . . Thomas R. and
Elizabeth Jane Worsham's great-grandson Billy Richmond Pruitt and his wife
Thelma have repaired and restored the old house. Today the furnishings are in
place just as they were when his parents expired. Yes, the old logs and the
poplar weatherboarding are still in place, underneath the vinyl siding
installed to protect them for years to come."
Elizabeth
Worsham Elliott died on July 20th, 1927. Her obituary, which Billy
Pruitt was kind enough to give me, reads as follows: "Elizabeth Jane
Hatcher Worsham Elliott, eldest daughter of John Greer Hatcher and Thursa
Stratton Hatcher, was born January 25th, 1833 on the old Powell
farm near Mare Creek of this county. Mrs. Elliott was a member of one of the
most prominent and highly respected families in the Big Sandy Valley, where
she was familiarly known as "Aunt Jane." She was one of the most
lovable, charitable women who have every lived in this county, and has
probably fed more people at her table without charge than any woman of her
generation. No stranger ever went away hungry from her door. She was first
married when but sixteen years old to Thomas R. Worsham, a brilliant man from
the State of North Carolina. He served in the Confederate Army and only lived
a short time after the close of the Civil War. To this union were born five
children, Angie, Gustavus, Mell, Lou and Tommie, only two of her children
surviving her, Gustavus Worsham of Helen, West Virginia, and Mrs. Lou Johnson
of Cliff, Kentucky."
"Mrs.
Elliott also leaves fifteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren. On
February 10th, 1871, she was married to Mr. T. W. Elliott, who is
left to mourn her loss. She was a faithful, devoted wife and mother, and her
home was in deed and truth a virtual orphans' home, for she raised her own
five children by her first husband, then two of her second husband's
daughters, two of her own daughter's sons, Harry Hatcher of Ashland, Ky., and
Walter Hatcher of Pikeville, [and] also the orphaned children of her daughter,
Mrs. Lou Johnson . . The deceased was a sister of the late Mrs. Joseph M.
Davidson of Prestonsburg [and] Mrs. Roland T. Burns of Louisa."

Maxfield, 2000:
The William Worsham & the Edward Fortune family moved to Dent Co., MO in about 1858. Brother, Thomas fought for the South in the Civil War and her husband fought for the North. Edward kept a diary while he was an infantryman with Sherman's army from Vicksburg through the end of the war. He contracted chronic dysentery while serving in the war which plagued him until his death. After the war, Edward was a farmer and a justice of the peace. He lived to be 74 years of age and with Maria had 12 children. A family picture of Maria Louisa with her husband & several of their children plus two Norris nieces is included on page 214 of Vol. 1 of "Ozark Heritage" a 1978 compilation of family histories from Dent
Co, MO. Maria Louisa is bur in the Copeland Cemetery in Dent Co., MO.

"Darwin was on Farm Road 1472 and Santo Tomas Creek near the
bank of the Rio Grande in northwestern Webb County. It was named for David
Darwin Davis, the superintendent of the Cannel Coal Company that began mining
locally in 1882. The community had a post office from 1896 to 1915. In 1914 the
population of Darwin was 800, and it was a station on the Rio Grande and Eagle
Pass Railroad. At this time Thomas Worsham was the community postmaster, and H.
H. Jefferies was a cattle breeder in the area. By 1920 the area mines had
declined greatly; they closed in 1939. The Darwin population in 1936 had dropped
to seventy-five, and there was one business. By 1983 all that remained at the
site was a cemetery."

 On 12 Aug
1920 Belle applied for a passport as Belle Worsham Ligarde. She lived in Laredo, Texas and
was traveling with daughters Louise, age 13 yrs, & Elizabeth, age 12 yrs. She was to visit
friends in Mexico. She was 5ft 5 in, dark brown eyes & hair. Her husband Fred
H. Ligarde was Chief Deputy Sheriff of Webb Co, Texas. Belle died 19 Oct 1969.
