p. 18-19. 13 Jun 1670.
Thomas Wicks of Huntington. 1/3 of home lot to wife (not named) & at her death to son John. Should she dislike living with John, then he is to provide a home for her. To son Thomas lot that was John Lunnd's (?) together with allotment of meadow testator bought of Noah Rogers. To son John other 2/3 of home lot. To dau Rebecka and to her 3 children To dau Martha & to her child. Estate divided among wife and four children, viz: John, Elisabeth, Mary, Sarah. Isack Platt & Thomas Powell named as Overseers. Wits: Samuel Wood, Caleb Wood. Sworn to before Jonas Wood. Inventory made by Samuel Titus and Joseph Whitman pursuant to order of Samuel Wood, Constable of Huntington Widow & son John appointed Eors by court which approves of affidavit of said Overseers. Thomas Sayre of Southampton. To son Francis (?) Sayre, 2 acres lying next his own in Capt.Neuf (?) in the Great Plains & 2 acres in the 8 acre lotts in said Great Plains. To son Daniel Sayre 2 acres lying to above 2 acres in the 8 acre lotts and 3 acres lying in the Commances (?) Lotts. To son Joseph Sayre legacy and an annuity of 10 pounds per year. To dau Damaris Atwater (?) legacy. To dau Hannah Sayre legacy when married or when she becomes 18. Household good to sons Job & Joseph & Hannah. Son Job sole exor . p. 99-103. 4 Feb 1689.
John Concklin of S. hold on Long Island. To my two sons John & Joseph Concklin etc. To dau Sarah Laughton 2 cows . To my other three daus Mary, Anna, Elizabeth all household goods. To my brother Jacob Concklin . To my good friend Mr. Joshuah Hobart 10 pounds. Exors: son John & son Joseph. Wits: Jasper Griffing, Hannah Griffing, Jasper Griffing, Junr: Pro: 15 May 1694 at Brookhaven.

Captain John Conkling was son of John Conkling, and born in Nottinghamshire, Eng 1631. His tombstone in Southold died 6 Apr 1694, aged 64. His dau Sarah md John Laughton, who was for some years schoolmaster in Southampton. The name seems in old times to have been pronounced “Layton.”

Isaac Platt dec'd at Huntington on 31 Jul 1691. To son Jonas a house lot to my wife 1/3 to my three sons John Joseph & Jacob to Dau Elizabeth all rest to my five children Jonas John Joseph Jacob & Mary Exor: son John, bro Epenetus & bro in law John Wood Overseers. Wit: Joseph Bayley, Robert Kellam. Pro: 22 Oct 1691. * Isaac Platt and his brother Epenetus were sons of Richard Platt the first settler who came from Hertfordshire, Eng in 1638 & died in New Haven in 1684. The two brothers seem to have settled first in Southold from whence they removed to Huntingto about 1663 Isaac Platt md Elizabeth dau of Jonas Wood. His brother epenetus md her sister Phebe. Isaac was one of the Patentees of Huntington, 1666, and owned No. 7 of the ten farms.


p. 107. 6 Apr 1694.
Job Sayre late of Southhampton, tanner, departed this life 6 Apr 1694, & Hannah widow renouncing to administer & Job Sayre ye eldest son of dec'd prays for administration which was granted 114 Jul 1694. [Job Sayre, son of Thomas Sayre, was the last survivor of the original company of “Undertakers” who founded the town of Southampton. He was born in Cirencester, England 1614. His house, still standing in Southampton is probably the oldest dwelling in the State of New York. It was built in 1648 and is still owned by his descendants of the ninth generation.

Majr John Howell at Southampton, Suffolk Co, NY. Unto John Howell my grandchild John's son all yt home lot I bought of Arthur Howell 4 acres – his 2nd bro Stephen – his 3rd bro Henry. Unto to Stephen Howell my grandchild 12 acres yt my son Nathaniel Howell now possesses. Unto Henry Howell my grandchild 7 acres. Unto my 2nd son Matthew Ogdens Neck. Unto Abraham Howell 3rd son his now dwelling house. Unto 4th son Ephraim his now dwelling house. Unto 5th son Theophilus Howell at Saggabonnet his now dwelling. Unto 6th son Nathaniel my now dwelling house. Unto my five named sons & Jno Howell my grandson all close of Calve Neck. Unto eldest dau Susannah Pierson 100 pounds. Unto 2nd dau Prudence Howell 100 pounds. 3rd dau Abigail Halsy 100 pounds. Unto my grand-dau Susannah Howell 20 pounds. Unto my beloved wife Susannah Howell 1/3 part of all. Lastly my beloved wife Susannah Howell & my 2nd son Matthew Howell sole & joint exors. Wits: John Jeffrey, Joseph Pierson, Manasses Kempton, Jno Campbell. [various receipts acknowledging receiving legacies] “Know all men by these presents yt we namely Job Sayre & Susannah Sayre of ye town of Southampton have …. Received..these presents of our honored grandmother & Matthew Howell Exors of ye last Will and Testament of our honored grandfather John Howell dec'd ye sum of 20 pounds at Southampton 27 Dec 1697. Wit: Nathaniel Howell, Joannah Cooper. Job Sayre (seal) Susannah Sayre (seal). Major John Howell was son of Edward Howell, the leader of the founders of Southampton. (talks about home lot , homestead, etc. ) The tombstone of Major John Howell, bearing the ancestral arms, tells us he died 3 Nov 1696, aged 71.


p. 93-96. 1 Sep 1693.
Epenetus Plat of Huntington. To son Epenetus land where I now live etc he to pay to his two younger brothers Jonas & Jeremiah 10 pounds apiece. To son Jonas land I purchased of Tho. Sciddmore etc. to son Jeremiah when he is 21 to my three sons Epenetus Jonas & Jeremiah rest to my well beloved wife. To my six daus Phebe, Mary, Hannah, Elizabeth, Ruth, & Sara etc.

Epenetus Platt was son of Richard Platt the first of the name in Huntington. (See note 17) The Neck “Sompwams” is now the village of Babylon and the other necks mentioned are in the immediate vicinity. (See note 50.)


p. 72-76. 28 Nov 1693.
John Sammis of Huntington. To son John all lands at Cove & 100 pound right of commonage I bought of Joseph Bayley of Huntington etc. & a gun that was Hunrians etc. To son Silas my dwelling house … only Silas to allow unto his mother in law during her widowhood half of my dwelling house, etc. Silas to pay to his two youngest brothers Isaac & David 15 pounds a piece when 21 & a square barrel gun. To two of my other sons Isaac & David etc. To son Jeremiah my new pasture at ye Cove etc. All other lands to my four sons Silas David, Isaac & Jeremiah. My loving wife Mary Sammis shall enjoy ye said Milpond. Also to my five sons John, Silas, David, Isaac & Jeremiah all meadow lands & my smith tools & bound to a smith & son David to a tailor & my brother in laws Abram & Isaac Corey be helpful to these two of their nephews that they may be placed in sober families – To loving wife beds etc. To dau Deborah feather bed etc To dau Hannah feather bed etc & where as there is a legacy due to my daughter in law Martha Corey containing 5 or 6 pounds etc I appoint my loving brethren in laws Richard Brush & Nathaniel Williams to be my overseers. John Sammis was one of the early settlers in Huntington and owned No. 1 of the ten farms. His children John b 13 Sep 1673; Silas b 2 Nov 1676; David b 4 Oct 1681; Isaac b 14 Mar 1683/4. His descendants are numerous.

Phebe Plat of Huntington, widow. Item: to well beloved son Epenetus Plat one of those three bibles which were left by his grandfather Plat. Item: to well beloved dau Phebe Tredwell my own bible, at her marriage received a double portion, etc. Item: to well beloved dau Mary bed linning etc. Item: to dau Hannah one of the above 3 bibles. Item: to well beloved dau Eizabeth ye other of above 3 bibles. Item: to well beloved son Jeremiah great iron kettle. Item: to well beloved dau Ruth ye pewter tankard given me by my father Wood. Item: to well beloved dau Sarah my silver whiste bells & chain. Item: I give to my two youngest daus Ruth & Sarah handkerchiefs caps & aprons. Item: to my two daus Hannah & Elizabeth all ye rest of my wearing apparel. Item: to my four youngest daus Hannah, Elizabeth, Ruth & Sarah etc. Item: I give four pieces of Arabian gold to buy bibles for my four youngest children Jonas Jeremiah Ruth & Sarah. Item: to well beloved son Epenetus 20 pounds. Item: rest of estate to my eight children Epenetus, Mary, Hannah, Elizabeth, Jonas, Jeremiah, Ruth & Sarah. Item: well beloved son Epenetus full exor. Item: Overseers: Joseph Plat of Milford, John Wood, John Weeks & John Ketcham of Huntington with Epenetus Plat. Phebe Plat in presence of Jonas Wood, Thomas Brush, Jeremy Hobart. Pro: 24 Jul 1697 bef Judge Col. William Smith.

Phebe Platt was d/o Jonas Wood & md Epenetus Platt in 1667. Children: Phebe b 19 Mar 1669, md John Tredwell; Mary b 11 Jan 1672 md Timothy Tredwell; Epenetus b 4 Apr 1674; Hannah b 23 Aug 1679; Elizabeth b 1 Mar 1682 md Jonathan Smith; Jonas b 24 Apr 1684; :Drowned at Amboy in the Jerseys 25 Mar 1731.” Jeremiah b 25 Nov 1686; Ruth b 13 Jun 1688 & Sarah b 4 Feb 1692.

Francis Sayre of S'hampton to my eldest son John Sayre his dwelling house at Flying Point agree with his bro Caleb Sayre & his mother. To my son Thomas Sayre & his wife Patience etc. Unto my seven children : John, Thomas, Francis, Jonathan, Ichabod, & Caleb Sayre and my dau Damaris Howell etc. To well beloved wife Sarah Sayre choice etc . My son Ichabod Sayre Exor when Caleb attain 21 . Francis Sayre

*Francis Sayre was eldest son of Thomas Sayre, one of the original founders of Southampton. The land at “Flying Point” is the homestead of late Captain Thomas Sayre …. The home lot of Francis Sayre was lately owned by heirs of Septer Jackson & now by Mrs. Caroline Jennings.
