Luther Woolsey had a friend named Gordon Backus. In fact, Gordon Backus built the home at 916 E. St. in Sacramento that Luther Woolsey bought [from someone else] in 1866. It is likely at least that Luther found out abouot the availablility of the property from Gordon Backus. Gordon Backus was born in Vermont but spent many years in NY according to mention in May Woolsey's trunk [would that I knew where?] Backus came to CA in 1852.
In that CA Federal Census it says that Backkus wife and children were born in NY. The next listing following the Backus family in the 1852 CA census is Sam. W. Woolsey. While there are no addresses given, from this record we ascertain that Sam Woolsey either lived in the same building or next door to Gordon Backus. Samuel Woolsey is listed also in the record as having been born in NY. Gordon Backus had a son named Sam. W. Backus. Two calling cards in May Woolsey's trunk were from a Mrs. S. W. Backus. There are also calling cards from Mr. & Mrs. G. Backus.
