In Richard Woolsey & Clarissa Cole's FGS sub. by Mrs. LaRee A. Hull Driggs, 2143 Terois? St., SLC 84109, she states that Richard was a blacksmith and a "Shoemaker". Also that Richard died 13 Feb 1879 in New Harmony, but he was in the 1880 Harmony, Kane Co, UT 1880 census (as above) so that couldn't be his death date. Also, under sources, she gives as a reference "Day book of Richard Woolsey". I have found this "day book", an account book of his income. Other sources include "East of Antelope Island, p. 172-3;

This seems to be a whole, new family, as of yet unaccounted for in Utah. They don't seem to be in subsequent censuses so they may have moved, as a family, to other parts. Because there is a son "Jacob" I have put this John as a son of Jacob C. Woolsey and Elizabeth Weger.

CENSUS: 1856 Utah State census (FHL film # 505913) Richard Woolsey settled his large family fairly early in Provo, Utah, UT. He and a large family (families) were found in the 1856 Utah State census (FHL film # 505913). In that census, only names & sex were recorded, so it is with some difficulty that the individuals can be identified. They were found on pp 954 and 956 and were definitely divided into three groups, as follows:

Woolsey, RichardM (s/o Joseph & Abigail)
SarahF(?)
(Foxhall) HannahF(born in Eng., also Alice, & Eliz.)
(Cole) ClarissaF[I don't know who Julian (Male) is.
(s/o Hannah) JulianM- I thought this may be the dau. Julie
(s/o Hannah) JosephMAnn, but she stayed in IA, md DIX.]
ThomasM (s/o Sarah)
p. 954
Woolsey, George WM(s/o Sarah)
WilliamMs/o Hannah)
(c/b s/o Clarissa?) RichardM(s/o Hannah, died 1844??)
HannahF(d/o Hannah)
p. 956
Woolsey, Sarah A.F(d/o Clarissa)
BrighamM(s/o Clarissa)
MaryF(d/o Clarissa)
James R.M(s/o Clarissa)
Melissa A.F(d/o Clarissa)

I read this census as follows: p. 954 (1st family) Richard Woolsey and two of his wives: Hannah Foxhall, and Clarissa Cole. (I don't know who the Sarah is, but certainly NOT his wife Sarah Kinworthy who died back in Nauvoo.) Then Sarah's children, ages extrapolated: Julian, age ?, Joseph, age 20, Thomas, age 20 (were these two really twins?).

The next group, definitely set apart by George W. Woolsey are children of Hannah: George W., age 17, William, age 12, Richard age 13, Hannah, age 11?

The 3rd group, p. 956 are definitely children of Clarissa: Sarah A., age 8, Brigham, age 6, Mary, age 4, James Richard, age 2, and Melissa A. age 1 or less.

I believe they were set apart for a reason and the reason being they are each grouped by wives' families, perhaps even living in different cabins, though the groups on p. 954 are listed in a single line, except that George W. Woolsey is given as shown. I have changed the family group sheets as above.

Also living in Provo was the following unidentified family:

"Because there are no ages fiven, this census is hard to make much sense from, but at least we have what appears to be one family group with eleven children named. Remember, Richard Woolsey, was also in Provo at this time, with a large family also. This family has not necessarily been found on subsequent census records. (Only Jane, Nancy & Mary could match as children of Thomas Woolsey, but they are account for."

There is a question that arises here: William states that he was born in ILL but the five children state that they do not know where their father was born.??
